  • My invention relates to improvements in pneumatic despatch tube apparatus and its object is to retard or partially check the momentum of the carrier in its discharge at the terminals. This is accomplished by partially diverting the current of air in the transmission tube at a predetermined distance in advance of the delivery terminal thereby allowing carriers in passing the point of diversion of the air current to proceed by their own momentum and deliver at the terminal with decreased momentum. Means are also supplied for regulating the proportion of the air current to be diverted.

TERMINAL FOR PNEUMATIC-DESPATCH-TUBE APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER S. JENNINGS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Terminals for Pneumatic-Despatch-Tube Apparatus of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pneumatic despatch tube apparatus and its object is to retard or partially check the momentum of the carrier in its discharge at the terminals. This is accomplished by partially diverting the current of air in the transmission tube at a predetermined distance in advance of the delivery terminal thereby allowing carriers in passing the point of diversion of the air current to proceed by their own momentum and deliver at the terminal with decreased momentum. Means are also supplied for regulating the proportion of the air current to be diverted.
Referring to the drawings, the figure represents a side elevation partly in section of an apparatus embodying my device.
A represents a tube for the transmission of carriers at the end of which tube is an ordinary double valve terminal E carrying the upper and lower delivery valves F and 30 K respectively.
\ C is a vacuum tube connected with a vacuum drum at its lower end, its upper end connected and in communication with the transmission tube A through the chamber B and ports D. The tube C is connected with the terminal E intermediate the valves F and K by means of a by-pass H controlled by the valve G and is normally in communication with the terminal E.
L is an ordinary relief valve mounted near the lower valve K and adapted to be opened momentarily by a carrier striking the trip L for the purpose of admitting the atmosphere and relieving the vacuum in the terminal.
P is a by-pass tube connecting the vacuum tube O with the transmission tube A at a predetermined point in advance of the connection of the vacuum tube C with the transmission tube A. The by-pass P is regulated by a valve N adapted to be operated by the handle N. The valve J in the vacuum tube G between the by-pass P and transmission tube A is adapted to regulate the current of air taken through the transmission tube A between the connection of the tube A with the by-pass P and the valve F. The valve J is operated by a handle J.
It will be noticed that the valve N shown in dotted lines in the figure, is opened more than the valve J, thereby permitting a larger amount of air to be drawn through the by-pass P from the transmission tube A than is drawn through said tube A between the connection of the by-pass P therewith and the valve F, and as soon as the carrier passes the connection of the by-pass P the air current diminishes thereby retarding the momentum of the carrier in discharging through the valves F and K.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a pneumatic despatch tube apparatus, a tube for the transmission of carriers, a double valve terminal connected to said transit tube, a vacuum tube connected to said transmission tube adjacent to said terminal, means connecting said transmission tube with saidvacuum tube at a point in advance of said terminal for partially diverting the air current for retarding the momentum of the carrier in discharging through said terminal means connecting said vacuum tube with said terminal to balance the pressure on the lower valve of said terminal and means for automatically relieving the pressure of the lower valve of said terminal after the carrier has passed the upper valve.
2. In a pneumatic despatch tube apparatus, a tube for the transmission of carriers, a double valve terminal connected to said transit tube, a vacuum tube connected to said transmission tube adjacent to said terminal, means connecting said transmission tube to said vacuum tube at a point in advance of said terminal for partially diverting the air current for retarding the momentujn oi the carrier in discharging. through said terminal, means connecting said vacuum tube with said terminal to balance the pressure on the upper Valve of said terminal, and means operated by the traveling carrier for automatically relieving the pressure on the lower valve of said terminal.
