vIMEROVED TRUNK-TIE AND CLASP.

Be it known that I, A. D. SMITH, of Grafton, Lorain county, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Trunk-Tie and Clasp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, andf to the letters of reference marked thereon, in'which- Figure 1, a perspective of jointed-tie part.

Figure 2 is a sectional View of the clasp part.

The nature of this invention relates to a trunk-tie, arranged with joints, in such a way that one part of it passes around the end oi' the trunk, and the other around the sides, giving it a diamond-shape on one of the sides; or a single one may be used, and only pass around the sides or ends, and then made fast with an adjustable screw-clasp, which is so arranged as to be readily adjusted on a fixed or adjustable single or double tie.

, To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my said improvement, I will describe its construction and operation.

The screw A, I usually make from three-eighths round iron, and i'our inches long', with a screw-thread cnt on either end, the one being right andthe other left-handed, and are then fitted to screw-cases B, which are one inch and a half long, and halt' round, with i'latv projecting ears C D, one on either end, in which O is the outer, and D the inner ends, when in use. On the. bottom of the ear C is placed a catchhook,"E, inclned toward ear D.

On the screw-case B is placed a guide and springlatch, F, secured by arivet, 9:, on the bottom and inner end of the ear D, and extends to the catch E of the other case B,'\vhen screwed up so that the ears D come together, and is a guard to prevent it from turning, and thus keeps an equal amount of the screw A in the cases B.

The latch F alsoextends to and beyondthe catch E, on the ear O ofthe case B, to which it is secured, the catch E passing through the aperture made in the atch F, and extending far enough through the latch F to be used without reference toit; but I would usually attach it to the upper end of .the tie-strap G, by passing the end of the strap between the. latch F and ear C, until the spring-latch F forces the catchllook E through a' hole in and near the end of the tiestrap G, when the catch-hook E, on the other screwease B, may be passed into a hole made at a convenient point in and through the lower end lof the strap G, when a few turns of ,the screw A will draw the strap G as tight as desired,`or a few turns back will release it again., without releasing the screw A from its bearing in the screw-cases B B, or equivalents.

The tie-part, iig'. I, is the best when made from sheet-metal, and provided with parts A B C D, which are of equal length, from eight to ten inches, and are joined to straps 1, 2, 3, 4, by means of rivets x x a: z.

Its operation is as follows:

The straps 1 and 3 are secured around the trunk lengthwise, and the straps 2 and 4 around the sides, and are drawn together by the clasp part, iig. 2, which also draws the straps 1 and 3 together, by drawing 2 and 4 together with the clasp, and as soon as the straps 2 and 4are let loose, by the clasp-yieldingjoints :1: x x x, prevents the trunk from being opened without otherwise loosening straps 1 and 3.

Having described lny invention,

That I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination,in a trunk-tie, of straps 1, 2, 3, 4, and bands A B C D, joined together in any suitable manne-r, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a trunk and tie, the adj ustable screw-clasp, constructed substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

3. 'lhe combination of said clasp with the trunk-tie strap G, substantially as described and for the pur-v pose herein shown and set fort-h.
