WILLIAM SPENCER LOCKE, OF LENTS, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 PORTLAND REALTY & TRUST COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
SAW-HANDLE.
Specification Vof Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1910.
Application filed August 28, 1909. Serial No. 515,083.
resident of Lents, in the county of Multno mah and State of Oregon, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in saw handles and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing- Figure l is a side view of the improvement as in use the saw being partly broken away; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the bracket and handle bar; Fig. 3 is a detail cross section on about line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4; is a detail perspective view of the bracket; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the lower end of the bracket, the handle bar being shown in section.
As shown, the handle comprises a bracket A having means for connection with the handle bar B, said means being shown as a shank A having a blade A2 riveted at A8 to the handle bar. The body A4 of the bracket depends from the shank A and has its outer edge A5 sloped, tapering toward its lower end, and the body portion A4 is provided in its inner edge with an upright groove AG for the reception of the end of the saw blade C. I also provide the body portion A4 at or near its lower end with a stop D in the form of a pin driven through the lower end of the body portion A4 and projecting on op posite sides thereof to abut the clip hereinafter described and prevent the same from slipping off the bracket. The outer sloped edge of the body portion A4 is preferably rounded and a stirrup-like clip E embraces the body portion of the bracket and has its side wings E extended alongside the saw blade C as shown in Figs. l and 3 of the drawing and secured to the said saw blade by the cross pin F to be presently described. The outer closed end of the clip has its inner face E2 sloped to coincide with the sloped edge of the bracket and the wings E are provided in their inner faces adjacent to said closed end of the clip with recesses E3, see Fig. 3, receiving the opposite sides of the body of the bracket as shown in Fig. 3.
The saw blade C is provided with an opening or openings C, of which several may be employed as shown in Fig. l for convenience i in applying the handle and a cross Apin F eX- tending between the side wings E of the clip E operates to hold the clip to the saw blade when the parts are applied as shown in Figs. l and 3 of the drawing.- The side wings E of the clip are provided with coincident openings G and G, the opening G being slightly smaller than the opening G and the inner end of the opening G being slightly enlarged or reamed out at G2 as shown in Fig. 3 to receive the head F at the inner end of the pin F, said pin having a head F2 at its outer end as shown vin Fig. .3.
In operation, the pin F may be drawn out to seat its head F in the enlarged portion or recess G2 so the clip may be slipped on and off the saw blade and when the clip is applied to the saw blade as shown in Fig. 3 the pin may be pushed to the position shown in Fig. 3 across the space between the wings E and through the alined opening in the saw blade G thus securing the said saw blade as will be understood from said Fig. 3. In operation the bracket is riveted to the handle bar and the stirrup -like clip is slipped over the lower end of the body A4 of the bracket and the stop D applied to prevent the clip from slipping olf the bracket and the loose pin F is passed at its lower vend through the hole G and its inner end is riveted or upset slightly to form the head F when the handle is ready to be placed on the saw blade. In applying the handle to the saw blade the clip may be slipped down to rest upon the stop pin D and the pin F be drawn out to seat its head F in the recess G2 and the saw blade be slipped into the slot or space between the wings E of the clip. The loose pin F may then be pressed to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the handle or bracket be tapped down until the body portion A4 is tightened between the saw blade and the closed end of the stirrup to securely fasten the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1. To remove the handle the operation before described is reversed.
I claim 1. A saw handle comprising a bracket having means for connection with a handle, and a body portion sloped on its outer edge and provided in its inner edge with an up right groove for the reception of a saw blade edge, a double winged clip closed at its outer end and having its inner face at said end sloped to coincide with the sloped edge of the bracket, the Wings being provided in their inner faces adjacent to the closed end of the clip With recesses receivingthe opposite sides of thebody of the bracket and the Wings being extended beyond said recesses to lap on opposite sides of a saW blade, such extensions of the Wings being provided With coincident openings, a pin carried in the opening of one Wing and movable at one end across the space between said Wings to project at such end into the opening in the other Wing, and a stop on the bracket below the clip substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a saW handle of a bracket having means for connection With a handle bar and a depending body portion sloped on its outer edge and provided in its inner edge With an upright groove adapted to receive the edge of a saW blade and a stirrup embracing the bracket body and havng'Wings extended beyond the grooved edge thereof and adapted to lap alongside a saW blade. y
3. The combination of a saW blade, a saW handle, a bracket having an arm secured to the saW handle and an upright body portion `having its edge next the handle sloped and itsopposite edge grooved for the reception of the edge of a saw blade, a double Winged clip closed at its outer end and having its Wings provided in their inner faces adjacent to the closed end of the clip With recesses receiving the opposite sides of the bracket body, the Wings being extended beyond said recesses and lapped on opposite sides of and secured to the saW blade, substantially as set forth.
