Description
litho-foelr CciliaA P. A. ALTMAEIR, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 96,652, dated November 9, 1869.
FISHING-REEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom' it may conce/m:
Be it known that I, P. A. ALTMAEIR, of the city of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, and State ol' Pennsylvania, halve invented a new and useful Lille- Reel; and l llo llel'eby declare tllat the following is a l'ull, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation ot' the saine, reference beillg had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification,
in whiclll Figure 1 is a top view of the reel, attached to afishing-rod, lwith a lille inserted.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the reel and its fl'alne or holder. v
I construct lny reel in lsuch form as to enable me to attach itto a rod by connecting two sections 'of the rod. Thus it serves to lengthen it, while itis Ilo llindrance in handlingit.
The reel, or revolving part F F F F', lig. 1, consiste of an axis, l, an ellipsoidal drum, A w, and two ellipsoidal llanges, F F and F F.
The shaft B has a crank, H, at one extremity, and passes through the said drum A fw and said flanges F F and F F', centrally, while bet-Ween the flanges a setscrew, A, through the drum `or ellipsoidal axis, holds the axis B in connection withv the revolving frame F F and F F. The forms of the axes, drum, and flanges are shown at Q,'A A, F F, fig. 2,.respectively.
The flange F F has two holes, l 1', in its wings. Tllese holes are for the pin a a', fig. 1, of the-springtrigger (l m a o.4 Said pin a a is bevellell at the point, seas to permit its sliding ont of the holes 1 l, li". 2, when the line is to be played out, and to retain its hohl in said holes when the revolver is turned in the contrary direction.
'llle reverse motion may also be adopted by starting the wind ill a reverse way, from the start, as shown at w z L, fig. 1.
.lhe said trigger m n o is support-ed in a post, m, to
whicll it is held by a pin on which it swings.
. ,The pin a a is held in proper connection with the ange F F by the action of the. -spring a n', which rests in a socketin the heel of the lever, and is held ill place by a pin, a', which enterssaid socket.
Tile frame or holder 's s sf s' is of an elongated oylindrilral.iorm,.having a cavity in it suitable for the insertion and free. motion of the revolver, and in fio. 1 is rectangular, as the tlanges onrevolver are parallel.
Said holder has at 'its ends tubular'sockets s s and s' s'. The-se are made l'or the insertion ol" the sections It -and 1t' of rod, as shown in fig. '1.
Said sockets, as shown in tig. 2, are slightly tapering,.with a wall'next to the cavity D D D D, to preventthe rodV cooling in contact with the revolver F F.
The shaft B ot' revolvervA F F has its bearings in theside pieces, which connect the sockets s s and s s. Theform oi' said side pieces is also ellipsoidal, so as to corne Hush with the edge ofthe flanges -EF of the revolver, whr-.h is always in a lille with the rodwhen the catch is in its hold, as shown in fig. 2.
Tile lille to be reeled is passed through a hole, z, l, which guides it to the drulll Aw, and the llanges F F F' F' serve to keep it on the druln.
The operations otl lny reel have been already partly described, except these:
The position of the l trigger m a o, tig. 1, and the slender form of the entire i'rzlllle, are of such anatm'e, that with one hand the trigger can be operated, while the roll is held in the act ot'ishing, and in case a lish is disposed to run with the bait, the trigger canbe disengaged, and theline can be allowed to play out, while the same hand can still assist the othelahand to hold the rod in position.
The reel can also be used for reeling clothes-lines, by enlarging it and fixing it on a post in one of the tubular sockets ofthe holder.
I claim- 1. The combination ot`- the catch m n o with the holders s s' and revolver F A F', when made to operate asl herein described-and set forth.
2. The holders s s', so arranged that the reel can be inserted ill a continuous lille with the rod, as described.
P. A. ALTMAEIR.
