CHIMNEY-CLOSURE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EARL F. RoLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paxton, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Closures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a cover and closure for chimneys, the object of the inven tion being to provide a device of this character by which the top of the chimney may be closed to prevent the entrance of rain water, as well as to prevent gusts of air from passing down the chimney flue.

A further object of the invention is to provide a closure which may be readily and conveniently operated from the interior of the building.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a cover-cap which will brace the top bricks of the chimney and prevent spreading thereof.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing showing in perspective the application of the invention to a chimney with the parts of the door in open position.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the upper portion of a chimney, and 2 the flue passage therein. Mounted upon the top of the chimney is a cap or cover 3 having a depending flange 4L surrounding the upper course of bricks and bracing the same to prevent spreading thereof. The top of the cap has sloping portions 5, forming a rain shed, and is provided with a central draft opening 6. This cap may be pointed or formed of suitable material to simulate stonework.

Swinging doors 7 are arranged on opposite sides of the opening 6 to fold downwardly and rest upon the upper surface of the top wall of the cap and abut at their inner edges to close said opening.

The doors are mounted at their outer edges upon hinge rods 8 journaled in suitable bearings 9 upon the cap. These rods are in the nature of rock shafts, having at one end crank arms 10 which are connected by downwardly converging links 11 with the upper end of an operating rod 12. The rod 12 extends downward into the attic or an upper room in the building through the roof and ceiling and is provided in practice at its lower end with a handle by which it may be moved vertically to swing the doors to open and closed positions.

The drawing shows the doors 7 in open position for the normal use of the chimney. When it is desired to close the opening 6 against the access of rain water or passage of air, the rod 12 is drawn downward, by which motion will be communicated through the links 11 to the cranks 10 to rock the shafts 8 inwardly, thereby causing the doors to fold down upon the top of the cap and close the opening 6. When it is desired to open the doors the rod 12 is moved upwardly, thus transmitting reverse motion to the rock shafts through the links, as will be readily understood. For the purpose of guiding the links, limiting their outward movement and supporting them in position, a guide 13 is arranged upon one side of the cap. hen the doors are open the links engage the ends 14 of this guide and thus prevent the doors from moving downwardly beyond a prescribed position and at the same time supporting them in such position. I

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the construction and mode of use of my improved chimney closure will be readily understood, and

it will be seen that it provides a cap which will protect the chimney and a door which may be easily operated and is effective when closed to cut off the draft and prevent access of rain water to the chimney.

I claim The combination with a chimney, of a flanged cover inclosing the top of the chimney and having oppositely inclined top walls formed with a doorway, rock shafts journaled at opposite sides of said doorway and having angularly bent ends, doors carried by said shafts to close said doorway, a guide upon the cover, an operating rod, and diverging links pivotally connected with said rod and the angularly bent ends of the rock shafts and extending through said guide.
