Description

A. F. SPAWN.
FIRE EXTINGUISHBR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 29, 1908.
965,761 Patented July 26, 1910.
I SH I WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEY can WASHINGTON, n. c.
THE NORRIS PETERS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABLE IE. SPAWN, 0F HOUSTON, TEXAS.
EIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABLE F. SPAWN, citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fire extinguishers, and is especially adaptable for use in extinguishing fires in oil tanks.
The object of my invention is to produce a fire extinguisher which will, by combining certain chemicals, and my method of using same, extinguish any fire where the gas formed by the combination of said chemicals comes in contact with the fire. The construction and mechanism of said fire extinguisher is especially designed for extinguishing fires in oil tanks.
Finally the object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, efficient and simple in construction, and also one in which the working parts will not be liable to get out of working order.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein the drawing represents an elevation of my invention connected to an oil tank which has a section of the shell out out to show connect-ions and location of fluid or chemical discharge pipes below and above the surface of the oil.
1 is a double tank to receive and hold water which has been fed through suitable pipes into the receptacles 2 and 3, having perforated bottoms in which receptacles chemicals are placed for the purpose of saturating the water.
4 are constructed shoulders in the bottom of tank 1 to cause the diluted liquid to flow in close proximity to the outlets 5 and 6.
7 and 8 are pipes which connect the tank 1 with a pump 9. The pump 9 is an ordinary double cylinder pump which is used to draw the liquid from tank 1 through the pipes 7 and 8 and force same through a pipe 10 into an oil tank 11 at 12.
13 is a joint connecting perforated pipes 14: with the pipe 10 a short distance below the surface of the oil, and also connecting a pipe 15, which pipe connects with a joint 16 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 26, 1910. Application filed August 29, 1908.
Serial No. 450,821.
from which joint four perforated pipes 17 extend above the surface of the oil in the tank 11.
With this arrangement the liquid is drawn from the double tank 1 through pipes 7 and 8 by the pump 9 and forced through the pipe 10 into tank 11 and distributed by theperforated pipes 14: and 17 below and above the surface of the oil. Through the contact of the water and chemicals in the receptacles 2 and 3 a gas is formed and, when this liquid and gas reaches the fire, the same is immediately extinguished.
The chemicals which are preferred in the use of my invention are bicarbonate of soda and alumna, although other acids may be substituted for alumna, but the bicarbonate of soda is very important.
What I claim, is:
1. In a fire extinguisher, the combination with an oil tank, of a double tank, a chemical receptacle in each tank, shoulders arranged at the bottom of each tank, pipes to draw the fluid from the double tank, perforated pipes to distribute the fluid above and below the surface of the oil, and means for forcing the fluid into the perforated pipes.
2. In a fire extinguisher, the combination .with an oil tank, of a double tank, a receptacle in each tank having a perforated bottom, means for feeding water into said chemical receptacles, means for drawing fluid, from the double tank, perforated pipes in the oil tank to distribute the fluid above and below the surface of the oil, and means for forcing said fluid to perforated pipes.
3. In a fire extinguisher, the combination with a double tank, an oil tank, and a pump forcing liquid from the former to the latter, of a receptacle in each section of the double tank, having a perforated bottom, a plurality of perforated pipes radially arranged in the oil tank beneath the surface of the oil, connected with said pump and a plurality of perforated pipes radially arranged above the surface of the oil in the tank and connected with said pump.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABLE F. SPAWN.
