Io all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHEL J. SELZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-"Water Heaters; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hot water heaters.
rlhe object ot the invention is to provide a hot water heater formed ot a plurality of hollow sections constructed to provide a heating surface arranged entirely around the lire box so as to necessitate a comparatively small grate surface thus insuring a saving of coal.
W'ith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the accompanyino` drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ot a heater constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. fl; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the boiler on the line L-l of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an inner perspective view ot one of the hollow side sections of the boiler showing the arrangement of the recesses therein which form the lues; Fig. G is a perspective view of one of the intermediate sections of the boiler; Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 7W? ot Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a similar view on the line S-Soi Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a detail vertical sectional view `on the line 9--9 of Fig. 2, showing more particularly the shape and connections of the water front.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the boiler which consists of hollow outer side sections 2 and a series of hollow intermediate sections 3. On the inner sides of the outer side sections and. on bot-h sides ot the intermediate sections are formed upper and lower longitudinally disposed recesses et and 5. The recesses 11 and 5 when the sections are arranged together to iorm the boiler provide smoke tlues or passages through which the smoke and products of combustion pass from the lire box before entering the smoke stack. The upper and lower liue- i'orming recesses 1 and 5 are connected at their forward ends by a vertical passage G arranged between the sections, and the recesses et communicate at their rear ends with a smoke box 7 at the rear ot' the boiler. The lower flueiorming recesses 5 are connected at their rear ends by passages 8 with the lire box. The outer side sections of the boiler are extended to form downwardly projecting side portions which form the sides of the tire box 9. lThe downwardly projecting rear legs 90 of the side sections also form a part of the rear wall of the lire box, as shown. The intermediate sections 8 are provided on theirl rear edges with downwardly projecting hollow legs 10 which form the intermediate portions 91 of the rear wall of the fire box. A portion of the front wall of the fire vbox is formed by a hollow water front of the construction best seen in Figs. 2 and 9. By preference its body 12 is rec tangular and at its ends it has shoulders 120 from which project reduced nipples 121 preferably made conical and entering tapered holes 130 in the inner walls of the side sections. Such construction causes this member to act as a spacer when the parts are assembled and drawn together by tie bolts as described below. The various sections ot the boiler are provided with communicating water inlet passages 13 and with discharge passages 14. The inlet and discharge passages are provided with suitable coupling nipples which tit together and form a water tight connection between the sections. lVith the intermediate sections 8, at the top of the same are connected water circulating pipes l5 which communicate with the radiators or conduct the ho-t water to the place where it is to be utilized. Vith the lower portion of one oi the side sections at the rear of the same is connected the return water pipe 16.
rlhe sections of the boiler when arranged for use are secured together by suitable tie bolts 17 and said sections are supported upon a suitable hollow base 18 which forms the ash pit of the boiler and supports the grate 19. The forward ends oi the ilus-forming recesses 4 and 5 are closed by a suitable door 20, whereby access may be readily had to said flues for the purpose of cleaning the same. The open front portion of the lire box is closed by a suitable' door 21. The
front portion of the ash pit formed by the base 18 is closed by a suitable door 22, while in the side of said ash pit is formed a draft door 23. The grate is provided with a suitable shaking mechanism 24: and to the smoke box 7 is connected a smoke pipe 25.
From' the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
A hot water heater comprising hollow' side and intermediate sections all recessed on their contiguous faces to form a tortuous passage from the iire box to the smoke box, complementary legs depending at the rear ends of all sections to form the rear wall, the side sections depending beneath their recesses and forward of their legs to form the sides of the fire box and having tapered holes in their inner walls, a hollow water front with its ends having shoulders resting against sa id inner walls when all sections are assembled and having reduced conical nipples entering said holes and establishing connection between both side sections, a base section beneath the others and the water front, and means for connecting all parts.
