Description

',l' cited tatw @tutti @web lfctters Patent No. 96,493, dated November 2, 1869.
IMPROVED DOOR-SPRING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent audkmakng part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH SIMPSONLof Newark, in the county of Licking, and in the State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmlwovementsin Door-Springs; and do hereby declare that the following is a t'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention consists in regulating the tension ot'the spring in a doorastener by means ot'a tenoned screw in the bottom ofthe tube enclosing the spring, and 'in the construction and general arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter described.
1n order to enable others skilled ill the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, l will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tothe annexed drawings, which represent :t side view otl my invention, partly in section.
A represents a cylinder or casing of suitable material, haring a strong spiral or coiled spring, B, enclosed within the saine. This spring bears against one end ot'the cylinder, while the other end ot'the spring bears against an arm, C, which is placed with one end within the cylinder, and projectinglr beyond the same. This arm is, by a tiange or other suitable means, prevented from beingr pressed out of the cylinder by the spring B.
' lhe outer end ofthe arm C is provided with a notch or recess across its face, whiclrtits around the,pi1'1 a ot'the hinge 1).
At the end ot' the cylinder A, against which the spring B bears, is inserted a screw-bolt, E, the outer end ot' which is pointed and tits into a recess in the knob F.
The hinge D and knob F are both cast with a screw,
l), embedded into the same for the purpose 'of' screwing them into the door or door-trame, thus bviatinguthe necessity of drilling or otherwise making holes through their tianges for the insertion ots-crews.,
The hinge I) is secured to the door-trame, and the knob F to the door, in such a position and at such distance apart, that when they screw-boltor adjustable end-piece E is inserted'into the cylinder A as tin' as it will go, the said cylinder A, with its arm O, will exactly tit between :hem in a horizontal position.
When the door now is opened, theA arm G will of course be pressed to a certa-in degree. into the cylinder by the compression ot' the spring B, and, as soon as the force is removed from the door, the spring expand-V ing, will cause the door to close.
1t will yreadily be seen, that by extending the endpiece' E, (the hinge' D and knob F,`heing tixed,) the lspringr B will become in the same proportion compressed, and hence its tension greater.
Having thus t'ully'deseribed my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the tube A and `spring B, the movable screw E, provided with a tenon on its outer end, as and t'or the purposes set t'orth.
2. The conbination ot' the hinge-piece D, grooved arm C, tube A, spring B, tenoned screw E, and knob I, all constructed and operated as andfor the purposes set forth. g.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, vthis 5th day otMarch, 18ti9. JOSEPH SIMPSON.
vWfitnesses: I
C. L. Evmu, A. N: MARR.
