Description

A. BERRY.
COMPOUND RAIL.
APPLIOATION FILED OUT. 8, 1909.
Patented July 19,1910.
UNTTE AUSTIN BERRY, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
COMPOUND RAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 8, 1909.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Serial No. 521,775.
'1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN BERRY, of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Rails, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in compound rails, and the objects of my invention are to provide a rail of simplified construction, and in which the wearing parts may be replaced with facility.
Particular objects are to provide convenient means for retaining the sections of the rail together and preventing the displacement of the central section, and it consists essentially of the improved construction described hereinafter in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view through the rail. Fig. 2 is a side View on a reduced scale.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the rail comprises a central section A, formed with a head and central web 11, and outer side sections B and C formed with angle bars. In accordance with the present invention, the central web 11 is made wedge shaped, the sides being gradually tapered outwardly from'the top to the bottom, the face of the angle bars B and G, being correspondingly tapered. The angle bars are of usual shape, having the webs 12 abutting the central web 11 and horizontally extending webs 13.
The various sections of the rail are retained by suitable fastening means, as by the bolts 14. To further prevent spreading of the different sections, a plurality of retaining'plates D may be provided located over each tie and fitting beneath the bottom of the compound rail and being formed with flanges l5 and 16 adapted to fit over the outer edges of the angle bars and hold them in position.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
A compound rail comprising a central section formed with a head and wedge shaped web, having the sides gradually tapered outwardly from the top to the bottom, outer side section fitting to the central web, said web being of such length as to come flush with the bottom of the said sections, fastening means connecting the various sections together beneath the rail provided with flanges adapted to just extend over the edges of the side sections.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
AUSTIN BERRY.
