CESAREl CAMPUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'BOX' FOR CIGABETIES, CIGARS, 0R TOBACCO.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented July 12, 1910,
Application filed October 12, 1909. Serial'No. 522,304.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be i't known that I, CESARE CAMPUS, a subject of the King of Italy, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in BoxesF for Cigarettes, Cigars, or Tobacco, of which the following is .a specification.
My invention relates to a new article of manufacture and the same is an improvement upon the devi 1.e shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, granted to me August 3, 1909, No. 930,154, with the object of simplifying the box or package for cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and` reducing the cost of manufacturing the same.
In the device of my improvement I einploy a body and a cover which are hinged together and which inclose an interior member adapted'to hold the cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and betweenwhich inner member and the bottom of the body portion is re ceived matches which may be separated from their holding device and be employed for lighting the cigarettes, cigars lor tobacco, all of Which is hereinafter more particularly described. f
In the drawing, Figures 1 to 6 inclusive represent the preferred form. of my invention and Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive represent the modified form of my invention.
By reference to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, Fig. 1 is 'a plan of the box or package With the cover opened and over-turned. Fig. 2 is a plan With the cover and interior member Vraisedy and over-turned. Fig. ,3 is a cross section at zc, fr, of Fig. 1. Figt is a cross section at y, y, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross section at the dotted line w, of Fig. 1, with thecover closed, and Fig. 6 is alongitudinal cross sectionat 2, e, of Fig. 1, With the cover closed.
With referenceuto -F i s. 7 to 10 inclusive, Fig. 7 is a plan with t e cover raised and over-turned. Fig. 8 is a plan with the cover and interior lmember raised together and over-turned. Fig. 9 is a cross section at the dotted line m1, m1, of Fig. 7,'With the cover in the closed position, and Fig. 10 is a longitudinal cross section at the dotted line y1, y1, of Fig. 7, with the cover closed. Fig. 11 is a cross sectionof'a form of the interior member.
In the vform of my invention shown 'in composed of the bottom a. and sides a1 and the cover iscomposed ofthe top b and sides b1 and these parts are connected by a hinge 2 so that when closed the up er edgesof the body and the lower edges o the cover come into opposition; the respective .body and coyer being of substantially thesame dimensions throughout. In this the preferred form of my invention, the interior member is composed of the bottom c and sides c1 adapted to fitvvithin the body portion o-f the box or package and preferably to rest down upon stop strips 3 connected to the inner surface of theiA sides al so as thereby to produce an appreciable spacevbetween the under surface of the bottom c of the interior member and theupper surface of the bottom a of the body. I
Z represents the contents of the interior member which as herein shown, are cigarettes, although the interior member may be equally Well adapted to, hold cigars or tobacco. The space produced between the bottom of the interior member and the bottom of the body is .intended to receive matches. These are shown at e composed as usual of stems and ignition heads. These matches may be secured to the under surface of the interior member or to the upper surface of the bottom of the body, and the securing means may be of any Well known ordcsired character, 'as the same forms no part Whatever of my invention. I prefer, however, and have shownthe matches as secured to the under surface of the bottom of the. interior member because the same are more accessible when so secured. Figs. 2 and 1 especially show the matches as secured to the bottom of the interior member and'in such position as tobe'perfectly accessible; the securin ymeans being a strip pasted .over the ends o the matches -and to the outer surface of the bottom of the interior member. This interior member in this preferred form of my invention, fits loosely Within the body and cover forming .the box or package, and in opening the box -or package by separating the cover and body, the
interior member may be moved with either 4of these parts. .For instance, if it .isvdesired to simply raise the cover t0 lgive access to the cigarettes, cigars or tobacco, the thumb or linger of one hand is'pressed against the edge of the body and interior member at 4. This holds the parts frictionally together so that the interior member stays with the body 'when the cover is lifted. n the other hand, l
if it is desired to obtain access to the matches, the box or receptacle when in a closed position is held with the body in one hand and the cover in the other and pressure is applied at 5 to the Iedofe of the cover and consequently .the edge of the interior meme ber, and when the cover is raised the interior member raiseswith the covergthe first of these positions being shown in Figs; 1 and .3
employed in Figs. l to 6 inclusive t'o denote similar parts. 4The essential diierenoes which exist in the respective forms of my invention illustrated in' Figs. 7 to 10-.,in
elusive, over and above the. preferred form in Figs. 1 to 6y inclusive, are as follows In the form shown in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the body and the cover are each of ,substantially equal depth but the cover is vlarger than the body so that it fits down over the body. The parts are hinged together at 6, and one side, that is, the side along the hinge is'removed'; therefore there are only three sides to the body as will' apn pear by special-reference to Figs. 7 and 9.
The overlapping sides of the -bcdy and cover at. the side opposite the hinge 6 are notched at 7 and-8.. The notch 7 of the co'v'er as will appear from Fig. 9 providesfor t e thumb or finger of the hand holding the body while the cover ,is rais'edfand the notch 8 of the body providing for thethumb 0r finger of the opposite hand engaging the side of the interior member and raising and overturning the same from lthe position Fig: 7 where the cigarettes are ex osed, to thep'o'- sition Fig. 8 where the matc es are exposed.
In the form of lmy invention Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the matches as in thel preferred form shown in the -o'ther gures,.
may be of any desired character vsecured by any preferred means either to the outer surface of the botton of thev interior member or to the inner surface of the bottom of the body, but I have shown. and refer to secure the matches to the outer sur ace of the bottom of the interior member because as will appear fromFig. 8," when' the interior member is over-turned, the matchs 'ard-"more accessible.
The interior member f shown vin Fig. 1.1 as a holder for cigarettes, cigars or tobacco, is provided with athin flat asteboard cover f1 connected along one side by a hinge 10 to a side of said interior member. The nominally free edge of this cover may be fastened In Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, Ihave employed the same letters of reference as are,
shown in"A down after the cigarettes', cigars or tobacco are 'inserted by an adhesive revenue stamp 11 as is commonly employedv for sealing cigarette boxes. This package is adapted to be employed with the box comprising the body and cover shown in Figs. 1 to G in- 1 in the-body and upon the upper surface of the bottom as shown in Fig. 2 by dotted lines. 1
I do not herein limit myself to the proportions ofthe respective parts or to the In4 this size of the box or package, as'the same'may be varied tosuit the conditions of the contents to be placed therein.
I claim as my invention: f
1. As a new article. of manufacture, a combined package for cigarettesZ cigars or tobacco and for matches, comprising a body portion, a cover hinged thereto and a separable interior member fitting within said package adapted to receive cigarettes, cigars or tobacco 'and to expose the same upon lifts ing the cover and to inclose matches between the interior member andthe bottom of the body portion and expose the matches upon the lifting ofthe interior member.
2. As a new yarticle of manufacture, a combined package for' cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and -formatcher` comprising a body portion, va 'coi/,er hinged thereto ,and a sepa'` the' matches to the outer surface of the bot-l 'tom of. The interiore member so that the matches are exposed, for,re mova1 after lifting the interior memberwith the cover. This interior member is connected to the bottom of the body by a hinge 9.
3. As 'a new article of manufacture, a
"low fiat box body and a shallow flat cover hinged vthereto, and fitting down fiatwise upon 'the same, a separable interior'member fitting Within the same and adapted .to receive cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and -to expose the same upon liftingthe cover, the 'relation ofthe interior member'and the fiat box body beingsuch that there is, aspace -12'0 between the bottom portions of the'lsame means for securijn matches to a surface o 'said combined pac age so that the matchesv occupy'this space and may be exposed for removalupon the lifting of the cover and lthe interior receptacle.
4.*As a A new' arti' le of manufa `:ture,` a combined package for cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and for matches, comprisin a shalf low flat box body and a shallow at coverf hinged thereto and lit-ting down flat-wise upon the same, the said parts being of substantially the same area so that similar sides occupy the same planes, a separable interior member comprising a shallow iiat box body ltting within both the aforesaid body and cover and in itself adapted to receive cigarettes cigars or tobacco, means for preventing the said interior member 'fitting down in the flat box body to the bottom thereof so as thereby to provide a `s ace for the reception'of the matches, and) means for securing the matches in said space toa surface of the said combined package. 5. As a new article 'of manufacture, a combined package for cigarettes, cigars or tobacco and for matches, com rismg'a shallow' iat boi; body and a Asha low flat cover hinged thereto 'and fitting down flat-wise upon the same, the said parts being of substantially the same area so Ythat similar sides occupy the same planes, a separable interior member comprising a shallow flat boX body fitting within both the aforesaid bodyand 'cover and in itself .adapted to receive cigarettes cigars ortobacco, means forpreventing the said interior member litting down in the flat boxbody to'the bottom thereof pendently, or so so as'thereby to provide a space for the reception of the matches, and means in part comprising a strip of suitable material extending over the face of theinatches and secured to the outer surface of the bottom of the interiorv member, whereby when the interior member is over-turned with the cover, the matches are exposed for removal.
