JOI-IN H. BLAKILOF WESTBRQOIQASSIGNOR T HIMSELF- AND J.
TODD, OF PORTLAND, MAINE;
Letters Patent No. 95,309, dated September 28, .186*9';
IMPROVED MEAT-CHOPPER.
The Schedule referred t in these Letters Patent and making pari; if the Same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. BLAKE, of Westbrook, in the county of .Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a ine'w and useful Improved Meat-Chopper; and I hereby declare the foliowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a side view of my iuvention.
Figure 2, a side View of spring-arm.
Figure, a front view of same.
The purpose of my invention is to furnish a new and improved device for chopping meat and other articles, as well as to provide a machine for cutting bait for shing-purposes My invention consists--v First, in the combination and arrangement, upon a support or frame so constructed as to overhang the meat-receptacle, of the geared wheel a, with its crank, gear b, shaft e, balance-wheel d, the connecting-rod e,
ecceutrically pivoted to said balance-Wheel, and. the square rod or piston f, with therelnovable receptacle g.
Secondly, it consists of the devices above recited,- in combination with the stud h, arm t', spring j, springpawl k, the ratchet l, and the spring m..
The support or -frame of my machine is shown at A, so constructed as to project over the receptacle B, in order to the proper operation of the' rod or knifef carrier f. This is leffected by the parts l and 2, through'which the rod operates..
By the-'revolution of gear a, by means of its crank, motion is. communicated to the gear b audits shaft, and thence to the balance-wheel. Upon this balance-wheel is the stud or projection o, over iwhich loosely passesthe upper end of the coni uectiug-rod e. This' rod is also pivoted to the upper end ofthe knife-carrier f, so that by the revolution of `the balance-wheel, a vertical motion is communicated to the vknife-carrier.
As the knife-carrier is moved' up and down, it is held in position by the before-mentioned projecting parts 1 and 2. Through these, the holes are of such size as to allow of the turning of the rod as`1t moves up and down 4 Upon the lower'projection 2 is placed the horizontal ratchet l. The square rod passes through a square aperture in tbe centre of this ratchet,.into which it fits exactly.
' This horizontal ratchet is Aturned partially at every vertical motion of the rod f, or, in other Words, at every revolution of the shaft e. This is eected by means of the stud h., arm i, spring j, aud the springpawl k. p
' As the shaft c revolves, the upper emi nf' flhe arm i is once during each revolution thrown o by the studY hfand, when the stud moves away from under the said arm, the spring j restores the arm toits original position, the said arm being pivoted to the frame of the machine, at p. This motion of the arm, occasioned by the stud h, causes. the spring-pawl k to push the ratchet la distance represented by the spaces between the teeth ou said ratchet at each revolution ofthe shaft e, or stroke ofthe rod f. Thus a rotary motion in a horizontal plane isJ imparted to the rod f and the knife r, which is attached to its lower end.. Thus the knife has two motions-'a vertical motion, and a rotary motion in a horizontal plane. that with a suiiicieut number of revo1utious,the knife traverses the entire area of the circular receptacle for the article to be chopped, and so comes in contact with the entire contents thereof.
The partial rotary motion which is given to the knife -r does not take place until, by the revolution of the balance-wheel, it is lifted nearly out of the receptaclez B, so thatI the contents thereof will not be'disturbedby the partial revolution thereof', while the machine is moving rapidly.
The knife e' is attached to the carrier `t by means of the set-screws e and the slots u in the blade.
The carrier is attached tothe rod f by means of thel that au exceedingly rapid vertical motion is imparted tothe knife, while, at the same time, itis automatically revolved, so as to bring all of the contents ofthe receptacle B underthe edge thereof.
An ordinary at' dasher could, instead of a knife, be Y attached to the bottom of the rod f, and the operation of churning be rapidly'executed, the rotary motion of the rod f aiding very much the production of the -but ter.
The spring m prevents the ratchet Z from being moved too rapidly by the pawl.
The upper end of the rod f is made round, and lits into a circular hole in a square 'block' of metal, y, and is secured therein, either by a head or pin. This admits of therotating motion of the said rod.
-The connecting-rod' e is bifurcated at its lower end, and pivoted to the said block of metal, so as to ad'- mit of the required motions of the said rod e..
The patent of J. G. Hirzel is for the combination of knives, with au intermittent rotary knife-block, with a toothed rotating metallic rim, an arm, certain pawls,
vand a guide. Such a combination yI herebv disclaim.
I also ,disclaim F. S. Rutchsmans combination, `consisting of a frame', a shaft, a connecting-rod, a sliding The elfect of this is-,
block, an adjustable cntting-bar, a. cutter-frame', knives, :t revolving block, a carrier, and a, track. Also, I dis claim the combination of L. S. Starret, which is for certa-in driving-devices, with ai. false spring-bottom; the first-named patent being dated August 11, 1868, No. 80,955; the second, May 25, 1869, .N o. 96,588; the third, J une 27, 1865, No. 48,458.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is-
The described arrangement of gears a and b, shaft c, 'wheel d, projection '0, rod e, joint y, toothed Wheel Z, parts t and '0, zum ji, spring j, projection h, on the shaft c, upon the frame A, as herein described.
v JOHN H. BLAKE.
