VALVE FOR FLUSH-TANKS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1910.
AppIication filed May 22, 1909. Serial No. 497,665.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH some, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Flush-Tanks and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in valves for flush tanks and aims at. providing a valve which shall be capable of being economically manufactured, shall be durable and efficient in use, and which may be readily removed for cleaning or replacement.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
A valve constructed in accordance with my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional details.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the service pipe, and 2 a delivery part adapted to be connected to the service or supply pipe in any suitable manner, inclosed at its upper end and provided at its side with a delivery opening 3, the wall of which constitutes a valve seat. Suitably connected to this delivery part 2 is a frame 4 which has a member 5 parallel with the side wall which carries the opening 3, but spaced therefrom and depending within this space is a valve member 6 which is formed preferably of a plain strip of flexible material such as rubher or leather. It is suspended at the upper end from a carrier member 7, which preferably consists of a central plate having depending flanges 8 between which the flexible valve member may be secured by means of set screws or rivets as indicated at 9, the carrier plate being designed to be removably secured in place by a thumb screw 10.
A plunger 11 is guided in an opening in the member 5 directly opposite the delivery opening 3 and it will be seen that when the plunger is moved to the left with sufficient pressure it will force the flexible valve member 6 against the delivery opening thus closing it and cutting off the flow of water therefrom, while if the plunger is moved to the right, the valve being freed the pressure of water will swing it away from the opening. Any means may be provided for securing the movement of the plunger, but I prefer that shown in the drawings, which consists of a vertical lever 12 pivoted at its lower end in a. part 13 of the frame and pivotally connected to the plunger, as in dicated at 1l=,its free upper end being connected by a link 15 to the float lever 16 which is pivoted to the frame at 17. Thus the float lever is raised the plunger will be moved to the left to close the valve and while the float lever drops the plunger will be released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A valve for flush tanks and the like comprising a water delivery element having an opening in its side wall, a valve element comprising a strip of flexible material freely suspended in proximity to said delivery opening, and a plunger on the opposite side of the valve element in line with the delivery opening with means for operating the plunger.
2. A valve for flush tanks and the like comprising a water delivery element having a delivery opening in its side, a frame carried by said delivery element, a valve comprising a strip of flexible material suspended within the frame in proximity to said frame, means for removably holding the upper edge of said valve strip, a plunger guided in the frame, and means for operating the plunger to cause it to press the valve element against the wall of the delivery opening.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RANDOLPH SOLES.
