SPRING-FRAIVLE FOR BEDS.
@MMWW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 11, 1909.
Serial No. 482,717.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Frames for Beds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lisly invention relates to bedsteads, and particularly to the mattress supporting structure thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a mattress supporting structure which will resiliently support the mattress and at the same time prevent any sagging in the center of the bed so that the-body lies out perfectly straight.
The invention contemplates applying the slats either crosswise of the bedstead or lengthwise thereof, as may be found most convenient or desirable.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means which enables me to disconnect the slats without any appreciable amount of trouble.
With these and other objects in. view, the invention consists of certain novel. features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accon'ipanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of the bed stead. Fig. 2 is a vertical loi'igitudinal section thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section on the line of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a similar section showing a modification, and 1* 5 is a detail side elevation of the modification with the bedstead shown in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the head and foot boards, and 3 the side pieces of the bedstead. In this instance the slats are shown mounted longitudinally of the bed and suitable straps 4 are, therefore, secured to the head and foot boards to form supporting loops 5. Any number of these supporting loops may be provided, and as all are similar I shall describe only the connection of one with the slats 6. A suitable spiral spring 7 has one end engaged with the loop 5, and its opposite end engaged with a. loop 8, formed on the strap 9, secured to the underneath portion of the slat 6. This structure is borne out at each end of the slat, and the springs, as shown, are practically concealed beneath the overhanging portions 10, of the head and foot boards 1 and 2.
It will be seen that while the slats will give as a whole their stiff bodies prevent any sagging of the mattress and, therefore,
preserve a flat sleeping surface.
In the modification shown in at and 5 l. secure to the loops 5 eyeanembers 11. which comprise a straight angular bar ha ving eyes 12, formed at each end thereof, which are adapted to be engaged by the hooks 13, of the hook member 1a, which is held within the loops 8 of the straps 9. In this manner a stiff, unresilient mattress supporting structure is formed which may be readily and quickly disengaged from the bedstead.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
In combination, a bed frame, flexible loops secured thereto, stiff mattress supporting members, coil springs connected to the members in line therewith, flexible members connected to the springs, detachable hook con nections between the loops and the flexible members, and means to adjust the tension of the springs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two sulfiscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. RICHARDSON.
