IRONING-TABLE.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BoRIs VVARSHAW, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tables for ironing and also for kitchen or other use, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, strong, convenient and durable table adapted for use in ironing and convertible into a table for other uses by simple adjustments.

The invention consists in features of construction and combinations of devices hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is embodied in the table illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the table in shape for use in ironing; Fig. 2 is a like view of the table in shape for kitchen work; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the last; Fig. 4: is an end View from the left in Fig. 2, but omitting the drop leaf 7", and Fig. 5 is a detail view of a catch-device; Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the table, taken below the top thereof and showing positions of parts in dotted lines; and Figs. 7 and 8 are views from underneath, showing the engagement of cleats with the leg.

The framework of the table comprises legs a b 0, a shelf d carried by the legs a b, a brace 6 connecting legs a b and fastened, in the instance shown, by screws 7 and a wedge g, a plate 0* rigidly connected with the leg 0 and with an upright h, a hinge connection at 2' between the upright h and a batten 70 on the leg 7), whereby the leg 0 may be swung around as hereinafter set forth, a bracket Z on the leg 0 supported by a brace m, and any appropriate devices for fastening the parts together. The bracket Z is cut away at n for a purpose presently to appear.

The top 0 of the table is attached to or is provided with a vertical flange-piece p which is hinged at g to the leg at so as to be tiltable with relation to the framework, and the drop leaf 1, whereby the top is extended to form an-ironing board, is hinged at s to Specification of Letters Patent.

the free end of the top 0. The drop leaf 9 is provided underneath with cleats t which embrace the bracket Z when the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 1, whereby the ironing board is held against lateral displacement at such time. The space between the top 0, drop leaf 9", bracket Z and the shelf cZ permits of the surrounding of the board with a skirt or the like for purposes of being ironed, while the tiltable feature of the board permits the skirt to be slipped thereon. When the parts are extended as shown in Fig. l, the leg 0 may be held in place by any suitable catch-device, such as the ordinary window fastener shown, the rim 10 being on the part it and the pivoted spring catch 11 being on the part 70. The hook 8 on the brace a may engage with an eye 12 on the underside of the drop leaf 7 so as to hold down the drop leaf when the board is in use for ironing.

The table top 0 has hinged thereto a drop leaf u by hinges 0, whereby the top of the table may be made into substantially rectangular form by raising the drop leaf u and fastening it up. This drop leaf u folds under the top 0 and a button w, or other suitable device, may be used to hold it there, the said button being hinged on the underside of the batten w which is fast to the underside of the top 0. By having the batten w" of the same depth as the thickness of the drop leaf a and the depth of the cutaway a on the bracket Z, it is obvious that the extreme end of the bracket Z will act as a support for the top 0 when the drop leaf u is raised, as in Fig. 4, as well as in the other arrangement when the drop leaf 1" is lifted as in Fig. 1. In order to support that end of the drop leaf a which is adjacent to the leg a, a block :20 is hinged at e to the end 39 of the top 0, the said block a: being rabbeted at y to provide a ledge for that end of the drop leaf u to rest upon when said drop leaf is raised as in Figs. 2 and 3. A suitable catch device, as the hook 2 and eye 3, may be used to fasten the block w in position.

In order to allow the workman to put skirts and the like on the ironing board and to take them therefrom without having to hold the top 0 up with a hand, any suitable means may be employed for automatically doing this, such, for instance, as the means shown more in detail in Fig. 5, where a catch-bar 4L provided with an L-shaped slot- 5 is hinged at 6 to the underside of the top 0 and engages by its slot with a headed pin or screw 7 on the edge of the leg 0. On lifting the top 0, the bar l: is drawn along on the pin 7 until the angle of the slot drops by gravity down over the pin, when the top will be held up automatically, thus allowing the workman to put on and draw off skirts, etc., by the use of both hands. lVhen it is desired to lower the top 0, the catch 4 is re leased by lifting it, and the top can then be dropped down 011 to the leg 0.

When the drop leaf u is up, as in Fig. 2, the table may be made into one piece, as it were, by means of the hook 8 engaging with an eye 9 on the underside of the drop leaf u, as shown in Fig. f, and the drop leaf in and leg 0 may be locked together by means of the U-shaped cleat a on the underside of drop leaf u (in Fig. 4) which embraces the end and the sidesof the part 1, thereby preventing the leg 0 from wabbling.

l/Vhile the drawings show certain specific forms of catch or look devices, and the same are above described, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the use of such ancillary devices, but that the same may be omitted or be replaced by other suitable forms of devices without departing from the scope of the claims herein; also, it is to be understood that the invention may be embodied in specific forms other than that illustrated in the drawings and above described, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the claims herein.

The manner of use of the invention has been indicated plainly in the foregoing description of the elements and their uses, so that a further mention thereof is not necessary.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A table consisting of a framework having fixed legs and a hinged leg, a top hinged at one end to a fixed part of said framework, and a drop leaf, forming an extension of said top, hinged to the other end of said top, said hinged leg coacting with said top and drop leaf to sustain them when the drop leaf is raised and said leg is in one position thereof and coacting with the top at all times save when lifted up to sustain the same.

2. A table consisting of a framework hav ing fixed legs and a hinged leg provided with a lateral plate or extension whereby it is hinged and also a bracket above said plate, a top hinged at one end to a fixed part of said framework, and a drop leaf hinged to the other end of said top, said hinged leg and its bracket supporting said drop leaf and top in one position of said leg and supporting said top in all positions of the hinged leg.

3. A table consisting of a framewor having two fixed legs and a hinged leg and a shelf connecting said fixed legs, a top hinged at one end to the upper end of one of said fixed legs, said hinged leg being hinged to the other of said fixed legs, and a drop leaf hinged to the other end of said top, said hinged leg coacting with said top and drop leaf, in one position of said hinged leg, to sustain the same and with said top alone in another position of said hinged leg to sustain the same.

A table consisting of a framework having two fixed legs, a shelf connecting said legs, a third leg hinged to one of said fixed legs, a top hinged at one end to the other of said fixed legs, a drop leaf hinged to the other end of said top, and a bracket on the hinged leg coacting with said drop leaf and top to sustain them when the table is open.

5. A table consisting of a framework having two fixed legs, a shelf and a plate connecting said fixed legs, and a hinged leg provided with a lateral plate whereby it is hinged to one of said legs and with a bracket above said plate, a top hinged at one end to the other of said fixed legs, and a drop leaf hinged to the other end of said top, said hinged leg and its bracket coacting with said top and drop leaf to sustain them when said hinged leg is in one position and with the top in all positions of the hinged leg to sus tain said top.

6. A table consisting of a framework having fixed legs and a hinged leg, a top hinged at one end to a fixed part of said framework, a drop leaf hinged to the other end of said top, and a drop leaf hinged at one side of said top, said hinged. leg coacting with said top and said side drop leaf when said hinged leg is in one position thereof and with the top and the end drop leaf when in another position thereof.

7. A table consisting of a framework having fixed legs and a hinged leg, a top hinged at one end to a fixed part of said framework, a drop leaf hinged to the other end of said top, a drop leaf hinged to one edge of said top, said hinged leg coacting with said top and said drop leaves to sustain the same in different positions of said leg, a block hinged to said top and provided with a support for the said side-drop leaf, and means for fastening said block in position to sustain said side-drop leaf.
