g ELECTRIC LIGHTER.
aai ,159.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 22, 1909. Serial No. 508,976.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be itknown that I,- \VILLTAM Yonai", a citi- `/.en of. the United States ot America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook7 State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovei'nents in Electric Lighters of which the followine` is a specifica-tion.
The main objects ot this invention are to provide7an improved form of electric lighter adapted to -be attached to existing house circuits to provide improved mechanism for makingand breaking the electric circuit; to provide an improved construction ot the contact pointe and means of alinement and adjustment of the moving parts; and to provide improved means for securing the operating mechanism Within the casing.
A pecitic construction embodying this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure lis a sectional View, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the igniting tip. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 8 of Fig. It, showing details of the operating switch.\ the outer casing or shell of the handle and 'the push button being removed. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 ot' Fig. l, showing the terminal blocks, the casing being removed. Fig. 5 shows an inlsulating hood which will be fastened over the parts projecting from the handle when .the device is used with an alternating eurrent.
ln the construction shown, the magnet coil l is wound on a Spool, comprising the core 2 of the magnet .and heads 2^ and 2B ofinsulating material mounted on the ende of thc core 2, and arranged for cord connection with alternating current or direct current house mains.. or with a battery, through the vterminal blocks 3 and et. l rlhe operating current is led into the coil l from' the terminal block 3 through a` flexible conductor 5 to the bottom. end of the non-magnetic rod The extension of the rod (i ia provided with a j )referahly non-corroding metal tip 7. The end ot' the rod engages the fixed contact S which is located on the metal cap 9. The adjustment. of the position ot' the contact 8 is made by turning the cap 9 on the threads ot' the neck l0. The cap and fixed contact point is scoured in position after adjustment hy means of a lock nutl ll. The current passes 'from the metal tip 7 through the contact 8 to the body of the ncckdt). 'lhe neck lo is screwed into the upper head ot' the head 'nating current. in order to 2 ot the magnet spool. making metallic contact with the button 12. spring contact 13 engages an operating switch button ll. The spring contact 1.2% is also in electrical connection with the upper end ot' the magnet coil l, the lower end of the magnet coil l being connected to the terminal block 4. magnetic disk l5 is secured to the rod 6 near one end ot the magnet coil. and a restoring spring lt? normalljY urges the rod to make contact between the points '7 and 8.
ln operation7 the device is connected to the house mains or to a battery, and the main circuit is closed through the coil l by pressing the switch button ll which ia convenicntl)v placed upon the handle. The current. passing through the coil actuates the armature disk l5. rlhe armature disk is .suspended on the non-magnetic rod t3 near the end ot' the. magnet. core. The normal movement et the armature breakeI the circuit between the contacts T and S. producing an igniting spark.
One function ot' the coil 1 ia that the seltinduction ot' the coil tenda to increase the igniting eli'ect ot' the spark at the break. After the contact .is broken, the rod is returned to the position ot' contact b v the action o't' the restoring spring 1G. lt thc switch button has not. been released. the armature \vill repeat" the make-and-brcak action in rapid succession. producing at each make and break an igniting spark. The non-magnetic rod (i is kept in alinement by guides consisting ot' centered apertures in the heads 2" and 2 ot tht` magnet yspool and in an insulating plug li' located in the cap.
.=\lt-hough hut one Specific embodiment ot' this invention is Iherein shown. it will be iindcrstood that numerousl detail4 ot thc construction shown ma)Y he altered or omitted without departing from thc Spirit ot this invention. A
The device .shown in Fig. l` and hereinbefore described. .is suitable for use with a direct current. viVhen need with an alterprevcnt. groundingot the cin-rent7 the neck l() and the lighting contacts. T and S, will he covered and protected by a tube or sleeve. 18. This may rammen atar. e, toto.A
he lined with insulation '19. or may be of` suitable size so as to leave considerable space between it and the neck l0. When used tor the alternatingcurrent. the neck l0 and cap i) will both be made ot considcrablj.Y lsmaller dianieter in proportion to the other parte I .than is shown in Fig. 1. The cap 18 is preferably open at the top, and provided with i perforations 20, to permit free access of gas When the device is used as a The iiange 21 provides for securing the cap. -to the handle.
gas lighter.
I claim: y l. In an electric lighter, the combination of a handle containing an electroniagnet coil'and provided with a lighting tip contact,
means for connectingl said coil to a source of energy, a non-magnetic rod centered in i said'coil and extending to the lighting tip contact, an armature secured to said rod, and means for restoring the Contact when broken by the action of the-armature. 4
I containing an electromagnet coil, a switch i on said handle', means :tor connecting said coil to a source of energy, an adjustable cap with a contact tip, a rod centeredA in end guides in said coil and extending to said cap tip,- an armature secured to. said rod, and means for restoring the contact When broken by the action of the armature.l
4. In an electric lighter, the combination coil, and provided with a' lighting ti contact, means for connecting said coi lto av source of energy', an armature having'r move-v tip on the armature, and means for restoring the contact between vsaid tips when broken by the armature.
5. In an electric lighter, the combination of a handle containing an electromagnet coil, and provided With'a lighting tip contact, longitudinally adjusted thereon, means for connecting said coil to a source of energy,
a non-magnetic rod centered in said coil' and extending to the lighting4 tip contact, an 4armature secured to said rod, ,and means for restoringy the contact when broken bythe action of the armature.
6. In 'an electric lighter, the, combination of a handle containing an y electromagnet" coil, and provided Witha'lighting tipcolr 'of a handle containing an' electromagnet p 4d ment longitudinally of the handle, a contact tact, means forl connectingv said coil toa., source of energy,l an armature 'having movevment longitudinally of theV handle,y a extending from the armature to. the contact Y tip'on thehandle and provided with a cons., tact tip, and inea-ns for restoring contact be-` tween said'tips When broken bythe armature.
Signed at Chicago this 20th day of July "WILLIAM VOLTZ'.
