WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rau-alten iii-ar. i, ioio.
Application filed August 1G, 1909. Serial No. 513,103.
To att fwiomiit may concern.'
Be it known that l. SAMUEL SBLOCI-iim, a citizen of the United States, residing* at York, in' the county ot Benson and State oit North Dakota, have'- invented certain new and useful lin iroven'ients in l\,"ashing-l\lachinos, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the ac- A coi'npaiiying drawing.`
lel
This invention relates to washing` nizchines, and the' principal object of the saine is to provide' a novel type of cylinder with which a pair oi' scrubbingr bands coperate to cause the clothes to travel around said cylinder and atthe saine time be thorouglily` scrubbed between thc rollers of said cylinder and the rollers of said bands. i
l'n carrying out the object of the inventioi generally stated above it is conten'ij'ilated employing a `tub in which a stationary cylindei'is inount-ed and provided with intergcared peripheral rollers, and a pair of tlexiblo bands which are provided with rollers, said bauds being arranged to surround the said cylinder and yieldingly connected with the 'saine so that they will expand `to permit various amounts of washings to be placed between theni and said cylinder. i
Inthe practical application of the invention itwill beunderstood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes'in details and struc- .tural arrangements, but. a preferred and practical cn'iliodiineiitof the saine is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the, iniproved washing` machine shown open ready for the insertion of the articles to be washed. Fig. l is a central ii'ertical sectional view of the washing' iuacliine. shown ready for op li1 ig. 3 is a similar View taken on the line 3MB. -li`ipz Q. Fie'. llis aft'rz'ifrnieir tary detail view'of a portion oi the washing machine cylinder, showing the inanncr of fastening one end of the scrubbing bands Referring to said drawings by numeralsly designates the tub of the improved washing r achine 'which is supported standards 2 and provided with the usual bottoni drain cock 3. vA cylinder, composed of a pair ot spaced apart disks mounted upon a sha ft G', is supported within said tub by means of said shaft which rests in suitable bearingsv formed in the upper edges of said tub. A. plu,-
has a balance wheel 12 thereon, the periph-l er)T of which .is flat as indicated at 13 so that the said shaft may have a beltconnectionl vto connect said disks, said bolts each carrying' a sleeve 15 which assists inretaining the said disks in spaced relation.
` The rollers vTiare preferably longitudinally ribbed, and each rib is provided-with transverse notches, this type of roller being; employed Jto-assure of a tirin engagement between the articles being washed, and also to inaiigle the saine as will be obvious.
The disks t and 5 of the cylinder are each prorided with two pairs of recesses or slots 16, the pairs oit slots heilig disposed on oppo site edge portions of each disk. Aiension spring 17 is mounted in each slot.. An upper and a lower band lil-18a surround said cylinder and are arranged so that they will be tilted between the disks and upon the rollers 7. Said bands are of flexible or resilient nietal and have their longitudinal edges turned at an angle and slitted to -orin bearings 19 for the rollers 20. The ends of said Each band also carries end sections 22 which are hinged to the bands, said sections being also 'formed of resilient or flexible nietal and i are provided with bearings 23 formed in the saine inanner as the described bearingsof the bands and in which the rollers 24 are inounted. The sectionsl at the end of the lowerband 18a and the section. at one end ofthe upper band 1S are provided with a guiding l loopi adjacent each longitudinal edge-into which guide pins 26 carried by the disks 4 and project. The other section of the band 18ais provided with guide arms '27 which are.
engaged `by a keeper loop 28 carried bythe -'disks 4 and 5. .Said arms 27 areof spring ffmetal and arenormally clamped against the :loop 28 by means of second loop 29' also caryfried by the disks 4 and 5 which engages over Said arms, as is indicated in Figd.
` i Normally the hinged sections of the bands are inv the outwardly projecting position y -shown in Fig. 2. When the machine is to be l used, the loop 29is removed from the arms 27', and the band 18`raised by ineans of the handle 30 to thep'osition shown in Fig. l
' and the articles to bewashedplaced within I"the cylinder, and the said band returned to its former position and 'clamped therein by zo,
means of-said loop 29. T he cover 31`is then `placedov'erthe tub and cylinder, and the lcylinder rotated by means of the handle or 'Iby power applied' to the balancewlieell.
lt will be seen that tlie'rota'tion of the rollers v74 'will cause the articles being washed to time-thoroughly -scrubbed lby said rollers.
iObViously, as the articles absorb the water of i the tub' they will increase in'bulk, which iiicrease in bulk is compensated for by the de- .Y A:scribed yielding connection between the 35 scrubbing bands and the slots of the disks.
What I claim as my invention is:-
y y l. A Washing machine comprising a'tub, "a cylinder therein, rollers carried by said cylinder', means for rotating said rollers,

3. A washing machine comprising. a tub,4
i. .ay shaft mounted therein, a .pair of spaced apartdisks mounted on said shaft, means for holding said disks stationary relatively to said tub, peripheral rollers journaled lbetween said disks, means for rotating said rollers, a' pair of bands fitted over said' rollers. rollers carried by said bands. and
an'ex ansible connection between the ends of sai bands and said disks.
4. machine of the character described comprising a tub, a stationary cylinder therein, rollers carried'by said cylinder, an upperand a lower band surrounding said cylinder-and fitted over said rollers, rollers carried by said bands, hinged sections carried by the ends of said bands, aeonnection between tlieends of said lower band and said cylinder, and a connection between one end of said upper bandand said cylinder and a detachable connection between the other end and said cylinder.
5. A machine of the character described comprising a tub, a pair of stationary disks therein, said disks-being provided with oppositely disposed 'pairs of slots, a tension spring in each slot, rollers carried by saidv disks, scrubbing bands titted over` said rollers, and pins carried by the end portions.' -ot said bands and slidably mounted in said slots.'
(i. A machine ot the character described comprising a tub, a pair of stationary disks therein, said disks being provided with oppositely disposed pairs of slots, a tension spring in each slot, rollers carried by said disks, ,scrubbing .bands litted over lsaid rollers, rollers carried by said bands, 4and a slidable connection between the end portions of said bands .and said slots.
- 7. A machine of the character described I means for rotatinfg said rollers, a' pair of bands fitted over said rollers, one of said bands having-both' ends and the other band having. one end, slidably connected to said cylinder, a pair of arms carried by one end of one of said bands', a loop carried by said cylinder and slidably engagingsaid arms, and a second loop also carried by said cylinder-for clamping said arms to the first nien- ,tionedloop.
8. lA washing machine comprising a tub, a cylinder therein, rollers carried by said cylinder, means for rotating said rollers, an upper and a lower band fitted over said rollers, rollers carried by said bands, end sections hinged to said bands,'guide arms Vcai'ried by one of the hinged sections of the upper band, means for detachably engaging said arms to said cylinder, guiding loops rcarried-by -tlie othersections, and guiding pins carried by the cylinder and slidably engagingwith said loops.
lntestin'iony whereof l hereunto atlix inysignature in presence of two witnesses.
