To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI FURBUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woburn, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Protective Devices for Carboy- Necks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

It is now the common custom to ship carboys in cases or crates and these cases or crates are made with an opening in the top through which the neck of the Carboy extends. Some transportation companies object to receiving for shipment carboys cased in this way unless there is some device for protecting the neck, and the object of my present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive protectivedevice which can be readily applied to Carboy cases as now constructed, and which will provide sufficient protection for the projecting neck of the Carboy to answer all requirements of the transportation companies.

.The features wherein the invention resides will be more fully hereinafter described and then pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a carboy case with a carboy therein showing my improved protective device; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a View showing the protective device before it is applied to the neck of the Carboy. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the protective device when in condition for inserting over the neck of the Carboy.

I have shown at 3 a portion of a Carboy having the usual neck 4:, and this Carboy is shown as contained within a shipping case or box 5 which is provided with an opening 6 in its top through which the neck of the Carboy extends, this being the usual way in which carboys are crated for shipment.

My improved protective device is arranged to be placed over the neck of the Carboy and is provided with means which engage the edge of the opening 6, thereby to hold the de vice in place.

The device as herein shown comprises the two side members 7 and 8 which are made of flexible material in sheet form and which are fastened at opposite edges to end pieces 9 which are interposed between the side members. The end pieces may be made of any suitable material and inay conveniently be made from wood. The side members may also be made of any suitable material which will be flexible, butpreferably they will be made of some material which is not only flexible but comparatively tough. A rubber compound, such as is used for roofing or some other similar material will answer the purpose. y

i The side members 7 and 8 are preferably narrower at the top edges 10 than at the 1 bottom edges 11, and they may be secured to the end pieces 9 in any suitable way, as by means of nails or tacks 12. WVhen the end pieces and side members are assembled, a construction such as shown in Fig. 3 is produced, in which the two end pieces 9 incline toward each other slightly from the bottom of the device toward the top. The end pieces 9 are of a proper length to project below the bottom edges 11 of the side members, and the projecting portions 13 of the end pieces form feet which are adapted to engage the walls of the opening 6 and hold the device in place.

In applying my protective device to carboy necks, the device is opened out by forcing the two end pieces 9 together and cansing the side members 7 and 8 to bulge away from each other at their center portion, as shown in Fig. 4:, and the device is then dropped over the neck of the cal-boy, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the feet portions 13 are inserted into the openings 6.

Since the device is made with the sides flat, as shown in Fig. 3, there will be a natural tendency for the sides to return to their flat condition after the device has dropped over the Carboy neck and whatever resiliency there is in the material of the side members will tend to force the feet 13 outwardly against the wall of the opening 6. The device will be preferably of such a size that the neck of the carboy will engage the inner faces of the side members and will thus assist in holding the feet 13 against the walls of the opening 6 and the device in place. When the device is opened out, as shown in Fig. 4, the sides 7 and 8 will naturally bend and fold, as shown, along the center lines 14, and when the device is in place the corners 15 at the lower edges will rest on top of the case or crate, as shown in Fig. 2.

My improvement is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and can be readily ap plied to or removed from the carboy as desired.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A protective device for the necks of carboys comprising two side members of flexible material in sheet form and two end pieces interposed between and secured to said side members at opposite ed es, the lower ends of the end pieces extending below the bottom edges of the side members to form feet adapted to enter the opening in the top of the carboy case.

2. A protective device for the necks of carboys comprising two side members of flexible material in sheet form and two comparatively narrow rigid end pieces interposed between and secured to said side members at opposite edges, the lower ends of the end pieces extending below the bottom edges of the side members to form feet adapted to enter the opening in the top of the carboy case.

3. The combination with a carboy case members of flexible material in sheet form and two comparatively narrow end pieces interposed between and connected to the side members at opposite edges and inclining toward each other from the bottom to the top of the device, the lower ends of the end pieces extending below the lower edges of the side members to form feet which enter and engage the wall of the opening in the top of the case.
