WITNESSES JOSEPH STAREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1910.
Application flleg April 13, 1909. Serial No. 489,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPH'STAREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to signs and particularly to changeable signs.
The object of my invention is to provide a sign which can be easily and readily changed, that is the wordin thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts as willbe hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throu bout the several views: Figure 1, is a side e evation of my improved changeable sign. Fig. 2, is a sectional view taken on line m-a: o Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a perspective of the character holder with a port-ion thereof broken away. Fig. 4, is a perspective of one of the improved letters adapted to be carried by the holder. Fig. 5, is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 6, is a slight modification of the holder. Fig. 7, is a perspective view of oneof the letters adapted to be carried by, the modified style of holder.
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I employ a suitable holder 1, which is provided with a pair of suitably spaced parallel grooves 2, which rooves are adapted to run the full length of the holder. Adapted to be carried by means of the holder 1 are letters, numerals or the like characters which will now be described. To more clearly illustrate the invention I have shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings a holder, provided with the letters S, T, O, R, E which spells the word store, and which are designated a. Each of these letters it will be observed is provided at its top and bottom with a suitable rearwardly and outwardly projecting ear or lip 3. The ears or lips 3 are adapted to seat in the ooves 2 as clearly shown in Fig. 2, are held in place therein by means of the filling strips or members 4, which members are secured in place and held in tight engagement with the ears or lips 4, by means of a phrrality of screws 5.
It is of course understood that numerals or other characters as well as letters may be provided with ears or lips so as to be held in the grooves 2 for holding the characters in position on the holder.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the letters or characters are changeable thereby enabling a party to make his'own signs by simply changing the letters or characters so as to spell or show what is desired. The signs can be either set in the windows of stores or like places, or they can be secured to walls of a building so as to either lie against the wall or project outwardly as desired. f
The modification of my invention shown in Fig. 6,-is preferably made of metal designated 6 and formed into such a shape as to have a raised flat body portion 7 and the beveled or inclined sides 8. The cars or lips 9 of the letters, numerals or other characters designated 10, are somewhat different in form than ears or lips 4 of characters a, in
that they simply turn rearwardly.
It will be readily seen that a sign constructed as above described may beeasily changed and may be easily taken apart when it is desired to clean the characters carried thereby.
It is of course understood that both the holder and characters may be made of any suit-able material such as glass, wood, metal, cardboard, etc., and that such changes as may fairly fall within the scope of the apended claims may be made without depart mg from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
'What I claim is:
l. A character holder comprising a frame, a plurality of half-round grooves arranged on the face of said frame in suitably spaced relation, sign characters having projecting dished lips adapted to seat in said grooves, and a half-round filling strip adapted to be carried in each of said grooves and engage the upper face of dished lips of said sign characters.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a holder, a pair of spaced parallel grooves arranged on the face of said holder and running the full length thereof, suitably spaced characters having projecting lips amass adapfied t0 be seated in said grooves, s fi1 1- signed my mama; to the specification in the ing strip adapted to seat in each of sad presence of twe subscribing Witnesses.
gmoves and engage said lips for holding 7 said characters in their proper spaced rela- JOSEPH STAREN' 5 tion, and fastening means for securely lock- Witnesses:
