CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SEARLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chairs and embraces a chair having a reversible back.
One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a chair, which may be adapted for summer use and is more sanitary, having a back pivotally supported on the frame of the chair so that the different sides thereof may be brought into use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention embraces certain combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts clearly illustrated in the commpanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved chair, Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of the chair back, shown partly in perspective, Fig. 3 is a detail front elevation of the chair back showing a difierent side of the chair exposed for use, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the mounting of the reversible back.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are prepared for illustrative purposes 1 denotes the seat of the chair having legs 2 and a cushioned top 3. On the opposite sides of the chair seat 1 and near the for' ward legs thereof arm rests 4 are fixed, having on their horizontal and rearwardly extending portions arm cushions 5. On the rear portions of the sides of the seat 1 upwardly extending brackets 6 are fixed. The brackets 6 support curved holding bars 7 and 8, which are connected at 9 to the rear ends of the arm rests 4. On the upper ends of the bars 7 and 8 holding links 10 are pivotally secured, said holding links being fixed to the outer vertical sides 11 of the back frame of the chair, which is provided on its lower end with a cross bar 12 and on its upper end with a block or bar 13. The back frame carries a reversible back 14 Specification of Letters Patent.

which is provided on its upper end with a shaft 15, which extends through a bearing opening in the upper block 13, and has mounted on its upper end a suitable head rest 16, which may be'fixed or rotatably arranged thereon.
The lower end of the reversible back 1 1 is pivotally held on the bar 12 by means of a second shaft 17, mounted at 18 on said bar. The bar 12 is cutaway at 19 and a bearing block 20 is positioned in said cut away portion around the shaft 17. One side of the reversible back 14 is covered with bamboo meshing and the other side is covered with velvet upholstery, or both sides may be covered with bamboo work.
The reversible back 1 1 is held in fixed position on the holding frame by means of a latch comprising a member having a depending arm slidably extended through an opening in the bar 12, and an engaging member 23 carried by the back 14. Each end of the lower portion of the back 14; is provided with an engaging latch member 23 so that when the different sides of the back are brought forward or into use the back may be held stationary.
By means of my improved reversible back a chair is provided that overcomes one of the leading objections to the chairs com monly used at resorts and as summer chairs. By bringing the bamboo side of the back into use a perfect summer chair is provided and by bringing the velvet side into use the chair may be adapted for use in winter. The latch device is operated by lowering the arm 22 so that the raised portion 22 will pass into the groove formed in the bar 12 for its reception, and the engaging member 23 will freely move therefrom.
The reversible back may be fitted to any movable or rigid backed chair.
Having described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a device of the class described, a chair seat having legs, arm rests secured to the opposite sides of the chair seat, brackets secured to the opposite sides of the chair seat, bars secured to the brackets and to the rear ends of the arm rests, supporting links secured to the upper ends of thebars, aholding means for latching the back in fixed posiframe secured to the links a reversible back tion on the frame. 10 for the frame having a bamboo covered side In testimony whereof I affix my signature, and a velvet covered side, a shaft on the in presence of two Witnesses.
lower end of the frame extending upwardly ARTHUR SEARLES. through a portion of the reversible back, a WVitnesses:
shaft on the upper end of the back extending JOHN J. GUERIN,
through the upper end of the frame, and ROBERT AIKENS.
