Description

"nitrd rgert @eine oma,
HIRAM DODGE, OF BEAVER'DAM,` WISCONSIN Lette/rs Fermn/0. 95,888, (laterz october 19, 1869.
w.. IMPRovED sArT-COUPLING.
*wwf- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent-and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM DODGE, of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft-0ouplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and 'use the same, reference beinghad to the accompany-- Figure 5, a section of a part appertaining to fig. 2, showing how the friction-rollers are held in place.
The present invention relates to an improvement in that class of couplings which is designed to connect shafts which are to run out of line, and its nature will be fully understood by the following reference to its detailed construction. y
D represents one end of a shaft which is made to rotate in a metal head, and which is held in place by a nut, M.
The end of the head A is provided with a series of arms, E, which interlock friction-rollers H, iigs. 2 and 5, and with a screw-thread, K, which holds a shell, or case B in place, as shown at iig. 1, said shell having a screw-thread cut on its inner periphery for this purpose.
The inner end of the head A is recessed out deep enough, below the shoulders h of the arms E, to receive a nut, M, without interfering with the rollers H. And on the linternal. periphery of the recess is formed a ratchet, fff, iig. 4, which is used in combination with pawls J, to rotate the head A, D in this case being the drive-shaft.
The pawls J are pivoted' to the nut M, iig. 4, and
in the present construction are held to the ratchet by the motion of the shaft D. Springs, however, may be placed between them and the nut, when the machinery to be operated will admit of no lost motion.
A cylindrical head, F, fig. 2, is fastened to the shaft C, and provided with a series of short arms, I, corre'- sponding in number to the number of arms E, on which friction-rollers H are placed, to relieve the parts from fliction.
The shaft O passes through a large opening, L, in the end of the shell B, which is so made as to x the -greatest angle on which the two shafts are to run out of line.
By means of this construction and arrangement, a coupling is provided, which is very strong and durable, and also free from any liability of catching the clothes of an operator or doing other damage, while at the same time a backward movement of the shaft cannot damage the machinery, as the shaft O is then stationary.
Having thus described my invention, y
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The head A, provided with arms E, internal ratchet f f f j, in combination with the nut M, provided with pawls J, cylindrical head F, provided,l with frictionrollers, the shafts O D, and shell B, as and for the purpose set forth. Y
HIRAM DODGE. IVitnesses:
