' Sipefcication of Letters Patent. Pfientdl May 10, 1910..
Application filedy November, 1909.- Serial No. 526,100.
To all whom it may concern: A j j Be it known that I, GUSTAV H. U'LBRIGH, a subject of the Emperor of German residing at Enid, in the county o f Ga State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in rll`oys, of which the following is a specification. l i
This invention relates to that class of toys which are v as cats, dogs and the like and it has for its object to present a simple and lifelike toy which by proper manipulation may be made to open the mouth and at the same .time to emit a sound which may be made tovimitate the usual voice of the animal Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation 'of toys of this character.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same con-` sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination `of partsv which will be hereinafterfully described and particularly pointed out in the claim;
ln the accompanying drawings has `been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; 1t being however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to theV precise structural details therein exhibited` but that changes, alterations and inoditications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired. t
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy constructed in accordance with the invention and representing a dog. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the frame structure of the toy. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of a portion of the frame st-ructure.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters-of reference. The frame structure of the improved toy is composed of abody 5 having a neck projection 6 extending at an angle thereto and a head portion 7 which extends from the Suitably jointed limbs 8 are pivotallyl connected with the body member 5.
A- bellows vB is suitably mounted upon the underside of thebody member 5, said bellows comprising a hingedly supported wall member 9 and a collapsible casing 10; said wall member being forced in an outward di-t eld and' made to represent animals suchl rection by aspring 11 and said wall member being'also provided with a valved inlet 12 sounding mechanism,
which may consist of a reed 14, is located.
rl`he freeend wall 15, hingedly supported adjacent to the underside of the cord` 16' which is guided throughsuitable apertures and grooves .17 and 18 inthe body, neck and head members; said iexible member being terminally attached to the jaw member .15 and -to the free edge of the wall vmember 9 in such a manner that when the wall member is forced outwardV by the action of the spring 11, the
door member shall be closed up tightlyv against the head member 7 as clearly represented in, Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be evident from the lforegoing description taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed that when the bellows are compressed, that is to say when the wall member is forced against the tension of the spring 11 in the direction of the body member 5, air will be expelled from the bellows through the outlet 13 and the vreed o r other mechanism, contained in said outlet will^lbe sounded; at the same time, the jaw member 15 Will be permitted vto drop by gravity which, if.desired,'1nay be assisted by a suitably arran ed spring 19.
In completing the device, the frame structure is to be covered in such a manner as to represent an animal as shown for instance in Fig. 1 of the drawings where the cover 20 is made to represent a dog. It is obvious 'tlat suitab'lcstufling of any kind may be em- .p o
ed in this connection. l y. this invention an attractive and lifelike toy may be produced at a very moderate ex ense. r
aving thus described the invention, what is claimed is- In a toy member having a neck member extending at an angle thereto, a head portion extending at an angle to the neck member, said body p'ortion and head portion being provided with a ertures and said neck portion being provided with a longitudina groove in the' upper side thereof; in. combination with a jaw of che character described, a body f .and with an outlet 13 in which latter a.-
'member 9 is connected with a jaw member head member 7 by aflexible -member such as a memberhingedly connected with the underside of the head portion adjacent to the head members and mainly accommodated in neck member, a b underside of the body portion and including AIn testimon whereof I ax my signature fa `hingedly supported spring-actuated wall in presence o two witnesses.
