WASHING-MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVILLiAM H. PRESTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to washing inachines more especially designed as an attachment for stationary and other forms of wash tubs, and in which relation it is to be used in connection with an ordinary form of wash board and serve to rub the clothes thereover, thus relieving the hands of this wearing operation.

To this end, the preferred embodiment of the invention, generally stated, consists of clamps which are rigidly connected together and have journaled in them a cross shaft, to the outer ends of which are attached levers provided with handholds. The opposite ends of the levers pivotally suspend arms which are weighted at their free extremities and at which points the reduced ends of a rubbing, or washing roller, is journaled. This roller is fluted, or corrugated, in the direction of its length to intermesh with the corrugations of the wash board, and is caused to travel downwardly over the same by the depression of the hand-holds; the roller and attached parts being automatically returned to initial position under the influence of a sprlng.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved appliance as attached to a stationary wash tub, the latter being shown in cross section, and the attachment in full lines in an elevated position, and in a depressed position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan of the attachment applied to the tub; and Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the attachment.

More specifically described, the invention consists of two inverted Uv shaped clamps 5, which are rigidly connected together, as by the screws shown in Fig. 1, by a cross bar 6, arranged at the front, and have the usual clamping screws 7 for securing the clamps to the incline front board of the tub; the sides of the clamps likewise inclining, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, to bring the tops Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof into a substantially horizontal position.

The clamps are ribbed to insure strength and lightness and have journaled in their uppermost portions a cross shaft 8, to the outer ends of which, at the outside of the clamps, are fixed levers 9 which are also of ribbed construction and are formed, adjacent to the shaft 8, with ofiset hand-holds 10, the latter serving as means for operating the appliance as will be hereinafter apparent. The ends of the levers removed from the shaft 8, pivotally support, on bolts or pins 11, ribbed arms 12, the free extremities of these arms being thickened to provide weights 13. Rigid with the weights 13 at the extremities of the arms 12, are bearing blocks in which are journaled the reduced ends of a roller 14. This roller, which is the washing or rubbing element of the attachment, is made of any suitable material and is constructed with corrugations in the direction of its length, of a form to intermesh with the corrugations of a wash board, in connection with which the appliance is used, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1.

It is apparent from the construction, thus far described, upon grasping and depressing the hand-holds 10, the roller 14:, pressed by the weights 13, will be caused to travel downwardly over the wash board to near the bottom of the tub where it will pick up a quantity of water and raise it over the garment which is on the board being washed, as the parts are returned to initial position, and thus rub and scrub the garment similar to the action of hand work in rubbing clothes over the surface of the wash board.

For automatically returning the parts to an elevated position each time they are depressed, there is provided a helical spring 15 having its opposite ends respectively secured to the cross bar 6 and the cross shaft 8; the connection between these parts being preferably effected by blocks 16, each block having a round shouldered projection for receiving and securing one end of the spring. The oscillations of the levers 9, are limited in each direction by forming the flanges thereof, adjacent to the cross shaft 8, with square heads as shown in Fig. 1, which contact with angled corners of the clamps 5, when the washing roller is elevated to a convenient point, and which contact with the top of the clamps just before the weights 13 strike the rear side of the wash tub.

It is evident that various changes may be made in the details of construction hereinbefore described without departing from the essential characteristics of this invention, and I consider that I am entitled to such modifications as fall within a clear interpretation of the claims annexed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A washing attachment for wash tubs comprising inverted U shaped clamps adapt ed to be secured to the front of the tub, a cross bar rigidly connecting said clamps to gether, a cross shaft journaled in the top of said clamps, levers fixed to the opposite ends of said shaft having ofiset hand-holds adjacent thereto, arms freely suspended from the opposite ends of said levers having weighted extremities, a corrugated washing roller journaled in the weighted ends of said arms, and a spring connected to said cross bar and cross shaft operating to elevate the levers, arms and roller when depressed by said hand-holds.

2. A washing attachment for wash tubs comprising inverted U shaped clamps rigidly connected together and having angled corners, a cross shaft ournaled in the upper portions of said clamps, levers fixed to the opposite ends of said cross shaft having heads, arms pivotally suspended from the opposite ends of said levers, a washing roller journaled between the free ends of said arms, said levers having hand-holds for depressing said roller until the heads thereof contact with the clamps, and means for automatically elevating the roller, arms and levers until the said heads contact with the angled corners of the clamps. 3. A washing attachment for wash tubs comprising clamping means, a cross shaft journaled in said clamping means, ribbed levers fixed to the outer ends of said shaft, ribbed arms pivotally suspended from the opposite ends of said levers, a washing roller journaled between the free ends of said arms, said levers having offset hand-holds for depressing the washing roller, and a spring connectingthe clamping means and cross shaft for automatically returning the roller to an elevated position when depressed.
