A further object of my invention is to provide an attractive prophylactic drinking vessel, especially adapted for use at soda fountains and other public dispensaries of beverages.

A further object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive and strong form of aseptic drinking vessel, which will combine a maximum of stiflness with a minimum of weight.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and in which similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. l is a blank for forming the bottom and stiffening reinforcements shown in the preceding figures; Fig. 5 is a perspective view, illustrating a modified construction, and Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 5.

Referring especially to Figs. 1-il of the drawings, 1 indicates the walls of a drinking vessel, or tumbler, which are formed of a band of paraflined paper, or other thin impervious material, having its ends connected by a preferably overlapped joint 2 to provide a smooth interior surface. A bottom 3, of similar material, is formed from a blank provided with a marginal portion l, for overlapping the lower edge of the band 1 and provided with a plurality of pointed tabs 5 and 6 of different lengths extending alternately in a continuous series from said margin for attachment along the outer surface of said band. By thus arranging alternately about the bottom two sets of tabs 5 ando of differentlengths, I produce a. progressively decreasing stiffness, from the bottom through that portion of the flexible band 3 which is reinforced by both sets of pointed tabs, and a less rapidly decreasing stiffness from said portion throughout that portion reinforced by the longer'set of tabs alone.

The pointed tabs 5 and 6 are shown extending, respectively, through substantially one-sixth and one-third the height of the flexible side walls 1; thereby reinforcing said walls to provide a maximum stiffness at the bottom, and a progressively decreasing stiffening throughout the lower third of said flexible walls. It will be noted that at the pointed ends of the longer tabs 6 the Stiffness gradually merges into that of the unreinforced flexible side walls, thus avoiding any sharp line of demarcation which would constitute a weak section tending to distor tion in use.

From the above description, it will be understood that my invention provides an improved construction, in which the margin 4 will securely'seal the vessel, and the pointed tabs 5 and 6 will provide convenient means for very securely attaching the bottom in position and reinforcing the side walls to provide a maximum of stiffness with a minimum of weight.

The drinking vessel is shown tapering to permit compact nesting of a series thereof, and can be inexpensively manufactured by the employment of a tapered mandrel and former.

Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a modification, in which the drinking vessel is formed with cylindrical flexible side walls 7 having a bottom attached in the previously described manner, and corrugated at 8 throughout their lower portion; said corrugations acting to stiffen the relatively thin side walls for a distance above the reinforcing pointed tabs, and to augment the attractiveness of the vessel. This modification can be conveniently manufactured in an inexpensive manner by employing a cylindrical corrugated mandrel and a corresponding corrugated former.

I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory constructions, but changes could be made within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letdifferent lengths arranged alternately in a ters-Patent is:

1. A drinking vessel comprising flexible side walls formed of uniform stiffness throughout, and a bottom having pointed tabs of different lengths arranged alternately about its periphery and attached along said side walls, whereby said side walls will be reinforced to produce a maximum stiffness adjacent said bottom and a portion of progressively decreasing stiffness extending therefrom, substantially as described.

2. A drinking vessel comprising side walls formed of a flexible band of uniform stifiness throughout, and a bottom provided on its periphery with two sets of pointed tabs of continuous series and attached along the outer surface of said band, thereby providing a progressively decreasing stiffness from the bottom through the portion of the flexible band reinforced by both sets of tabs, and a more gradually decreasing stiffness from said portion throughout the reinforcement of the longer set of pointed tabs alone, substantially as described.
