Description

'J. B. BREWSTER.
Whiffletrea,
No. 95,641. Patented 001;.12, 1869.
N.PETERS. PHOTCLLITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. n (L JAMES B. BREWSTER, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 95,641, dated October 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAUGHT-BARS FOR VEHICLES.
The Schedulefefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, JAMES B. Bnnws'rnn, of Flushing, in the county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draught-Bars for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of a whiflietree, arranged according tomy improved plan.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts. 1
The object of this invention is to so strengthen the draught-bars, that is to say, the whifiletrees, evenerbars, pole-yokes, poles, and shafts, of all wheeled vehicles and sleighs, that the same will be greatly strengthened in 'the direction in which the greatest strain is applied.
The invention consists in making such bars, poles, &c., of double thicknesses of wood, with layers of metal between them. Thereby such articles are made very strong, and many accidents will be prevented, which are now occasioned, tor a great extent, by the weakness of the draught-bars.
A, in the drawing, represents a whiflietree, of suitable formand size, and made of two or more layers of wood, a a, with a plate oLmetal, l), interposed be-v tween every two such layers.
The pieces are clamped together by bolts 0 c. or otherwise.
The wood may all be made of one piece, and sawed to form a groove, for-the metal to be put in.
As on whiflietrees, evener-bars, and pole-yokes, the
strain is applied horizontally, the metal should be also put in horizontally, as shown, to offer the greatest resistance in the direction of the greatest strain. v
Poles and shafts are also best made with horizontal metal plates, but may, in some cases, be advantageously provided with such plates set on edge.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to sechre by Letters Patent- The whifitletrees, evener-bars, and other draught bars of vehicles, made of wood, with metal plates inserted in the wood, between the layers or checks of the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
' JAMES B. BREWSTER.
