JAMES LOWE ERSKINE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE JAMES LOWE ERSKINE 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A-CORPORATION.
To all whom '51. may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES Lown ERSKINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved brush, made in sections capable of being readily taken apart for cleaning, sterilizing or renewing any one of the sections in case the same is worn out or injured, thus saving the cost of a new brush.
For the purpose mentioned, the brush section is provided with a collar carrying the bristles and having an annular bead adjacent to the bristles, the collar fitting the ferrule and the head engaging the end of the ferrule exteriorly, and a handle engaging both the ferrule and the collar.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same.
The brush illustrated in the drawings consists essentially of the bristle section A, the ferrule B and the handle C. The bristles A of the bristle section A are secured ina collar A fitting snugly into the bore B at one end of the ferrule B, and the collar A is rovided at its outer end with an exterior cad A abutting against the outer end of the ferrule B, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The inner end of the collar A is provided with an interior screw thread A into which screws the exteriorly threaded terminal C of the handle C, and the latter is provided with a second set of screw threads C adjacent to the screw threads 0 and screwing into interior screw threads B formed on the rear end of the ferrule B. Now by the arrangement described the handle C screws into both the collar A and the ferrule B, and consequently the collar A of the bristle section A is drawn inwardly in the ferrule B, so as to abut the bead A against the outer end of the ferrule B. At the same time the handle C is firmly secured in the ferrule B, so that the three sections forming the brush are securely united, and

the sections can be readily taken apart by unscrewing the handle C from the collar A and the ferrule B.
The handle G is provided with a shoulder C adjacent to the rear end of the screw threads C to abut against the rear end of the ferrule B at the time the screw-threaded portions C and C are screwed home in the collar A and the ferrule B.
Although I prefer uniting the several parts by screw threads, as described, it is evident that other means may be employed.
By the arrangement described, the water or other liquid running off the brush, when the latter is used, is deflected by the bead A and hence is not liable to pass into the ferrule B and crack or otherwise injure the same. It will also be noticed that by extending the handle into the collar carrying the bristles, the ferrule B is relieved of some of the strain when the brush is used, and an exceedingly strong and durable brush is provided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A brush, comprising a bristle section having bristles and a collar, in one end of which the bristles are fastened, the collar having an interior screw thread at the other end, and an exterior bead at the end containing the bristles, a ferrule, into one end of which the said collar fits, the other end of the collar having an interior screw thread, and a handle having two sets of screw threads, one screwing into the said ferrule and the other screwing into the said collar.
2. A brush, comprising a bristle section having bristles and a collar, in the outer end of which the bristles are set, the collar having an exterior bead at the outer end, a ferrule, into the outer end of which fits the said collar, the bead thereof engaging the terminal of the ferrule exteriorly, and a. handle attached to the said ferrule and having a reduced portion extending into the ferrule attached to the inner end of the said collar.
3. A brush comprising a collar provided with bristles, a ferrule receiving the collar in one end, and a handle extending into the other end of the ferrule and detachably connected with the collar, said collar having an annular bead and the handle an annular shoulder for engaging the respective ends In testimony whereof I have signed my of the ferrule. name to this specification in the presence of i. A brush comprising a collar provided two subscribing Witnesses.
