To all 'whom *it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH F. HAERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scotia, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presses and has special reference to an improvement in the receptacle or barrel which is employed.
An object of this invention is to construct a press of this character which can be readily cleansed and disassembled for the purpose of cleansing the same.
The invention has for another object the construction of a receptacle which may be taken apart so that the interior thereof may be reached with comparative ease.
The invention further designs the formation of a locking means by which the device may be quickly secured or released as desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a press having the improvement applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the receptacle detached, Fig. 3 is a detailed and enlarged side elevation of the detachable securing means for the receptacle, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the detachable securing means, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the hinged sections of the hoops.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a base of a press which is provided with standards 11 and 12 extended upwardly therefrom where they support a cross arm 13 upon their upper extremities. The cross arm 13 is intermediately enlarged as at let and is vertically apertured where it is threaded for the reception of a screw plunger 15 which is fed downwardly by a hand wheel 16. The base 10 supports upon its upper surface an outer receptacle 17 which is of practically any construction so that the same will admit of the insertion of the lower end of a barrel 18 which is adapted to receive the material to be crushed. The plunger 15 is provided with a swiveled cap 19 upon its lower extremity which is adapted to engage upon a piston 2O fitted snugly into the barrel 18 and which is adapted to be fed downwardly against the material by the plunger 15.
The barrel 18 which forms an important part of this invention comprises two semicircular sections 21 and 22 which comprise each a plurality of small staves riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the semicircular hoops 23 positionedintermediately and at the opposite ends of the barrel 18. The hoops 23 are of two sections which are hinged at one side by the employment of the fork 24: carried by the extremities of one of the sections and of an eye 25 secured upon the opposite section to engage between the forks 2a and to be held in such position by a pintle 26. This construction allows a free swinging of the sections 21 and 22 of the barrel 18. For the purpose of detachably securing the two sections together the opposite extremities of the hoops 23 are pro` vided with forks 27 which intert with eyes 28 through which are formed tapering apertures for the reception of the tapered plugs 29 which are positioned therethrough to hold the sections in a closed position. The plugs 29 are each provided with a handle 30 formed approximately at a right angle to said plug by means of which the operator is enabled to readily remove the plugs 29 from engagement with the eye 28 and forks 27.
By referring particularly to Fig. l of the drawings, it will be seen that the inner contour of the hoops conform to the outer contour of the barrel throughout their entire length, and that the inner surfaces of the detachable meeting ends of said hoops therefore bear in a like or uniform manner in respect to the remaining parts of the hoops when the latter are united or locked about the barrel thus constructed.
The operation of the device is apparent from the simplicity of its structure for when it is desired to cleanse the interior of the barrel 18 after usage the operator grasps the handles 30 and' removes the plugs 29 from engagement with the eyes 28 and forks 27 when the sections 21 and 22 may be swung outwardly from each other and admit of easy access to the interior of the barrel 18.
Vhat is claimed is In a fastening device of the class described, the combination with a two section barrel and semieireular hoop sections therethrough and registering with one anhingedly connected at their extremities to one another, of forks formed upon the eX- tremities of said hoop section at one side of the barrel, enlargements formed upon the extremity of the opposite ends of the hoop section for engagement between the arms of said forks, the inner contour of said forks and said enlargements conforming to the inner contour or' said hoop sections of which they form a part, said forks and enlargements having tapered apertures formed other, a tapered plug adapted to be received by said tapered openings, and a handle forming a part of said plug for removing the latter from its looked or engaging position.
