Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented D 'ec. "7, 1909.
Application filed February e, 1909. Serial No. 476,679.
To all whom 'it may concern: I
Be it known that'I, ELIEL L. SHARPNECK,
of Winthrop, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting Devices for Internal-Combustion Motors, of
- which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention relates to improvements in" internal combustion motors and has refer ence particularly to devices designed to effeet the startin of such motors.
The object this invention is to provide means, for dischar ing into an internal'com-. bustion motor a cfiargeof fluid under press'ure-toefiect the initial movement of one or more of itspistons. f p v I The invention consists in such peculiar features of, construction and combinations I of parts as shall hereinafter be morefully described and pointed out intheclaims.
Figure 1, irepresents aside elevation of parts 'of an internal combustion motoncf well known construction shown in relation 7 to thegdash board ofa vehicle'and as combined' withthe improved starting mechanism. Fig. 2, represents a reverse. view of trolling valve for the supply pipe of the startin device with its actuating cam.
Simi ar characters of reference designate corres ondingparts throughout. I
As s own in the drawings 9-represents the casing of any well known motor mechanism designed to be operated by fluid compression "and particularly any well know internal combustion engine having one or more cylinders-each furnished with the usual movable iston. Suitable gas'eousfluid being sup hed to-said cylinders through-pipes 10 an 11 and the unconsumed gases being delivered from-said cylinderstothepipes 12 and 13 tothe'exhau'st pipe 14. I
' carrying this. invention into practice I provide the exhaust pipe or chamber 14 with -valve 17 designe some of the parts shownin Fig. 1. Fig. 3,
the branch outlet 15 having a valve seat at its inner end. Journaled in bearings in the wall of the chamber 14is the shaft 16 having at its inner .ortion the beveled edge at times, to close said chamber 14'and "furnished with the valve stem 18 carrying the conical valve 19 adapted, when the valve 17 is in the open position, to close the outlet 15. The outer end of the shaft 16 is supplied with the'collar 20 having the cam face 21 and arm 22 and the arm 23, normally retracted by spring 24, secured are normally positioned as shownin Fig.6.
to said arm and to a fixed portionv of the chamber 14, whereby the valves Hand 19 7Q Theoutlet 15 is preferably connectedwith the casing 25 of any well known check valve and said casing 25 is connected by the pipe. 26 with the pressure tank 27 located in any desired position and having the outlet 28 which communicates through the valve chamber 29 with the pipe 30 connected with the fluid delivery pipe. 11. Valve chamber 29 is furnished with the usual check valve 31 having'the springlretracted valve stem 32 the outer end 'ofwhich is rounded somewhat. In addition to the outlet pipe 28 the tank 27" is preferably furnished with the ,pipe 33 communicating with thewell known pressure gage '34ilocatecl at any convenient point but herein shown as mounted on the dash board D of a'vehicle;
Mounted on the dash board D, or on anysuitable. support, is the plate 35 having the having a roller bearing which is located between the cams 21 and arm 22 of collar 20.
When the motor is operating under normal conditions the parts are in the positions shown in full lines. If now the operator desires to store fluid under compression, for
use in restarting, opportunity is taken at a -time when the motor is not unduly loaded as, in case of a vehicle driven by said motor, I
when such vehicle is descending an incline,
to shut oil? the sparking mechanism whereupon the motor will run, by momentum, as a compressorand will force the compressed whilethe rotation of shaft 40, by such 'movement of arm 41 swings the arm 44 the roller bearing of which acting against cam 21 effects the swinging of said cam, against the action of its spring24, and the partial rotation of the shaft 16 to bring valves 17 and 19 to the positions shown in. dotted lines in Fig. 6 whereupon the compressed gaseous fluid forced outward by the operation of the motor will pass through the outlet 15, check valve 25 and pipe 26 to tank 27. When the gage 34 indicates that the pressure within the tank 27 is suitable the operator swings handle 41 back to notch 39 and thus releases cam 21 which swings back to its normal po sition under the retractive strain of the spring 24 to efleet the closing of valve 19 against its seal and to open valve 17. At this time-the check valve in casing 25 will prevent the escape of gaseous fluid through pipe 26' and outlet 15 while the valve 31 will prevent the escape of such gastthrough pipe 30. The operation of restartingv the motor is extremely. simple and is accomplished by swinging lever handle 41 to notch 38 where; by the shaft 40 is rotated to brin its cam 43 to be against the end of the va ve stem 32 and to press inward said stem and open 'valve 31 to permit the passage of the gaseous fluid, stored in tank 27, through pipes 30 and 11 to the motor-9 to effect the initial movement of said motor until it reaches a point at which the charge of fluid is exploded. The subsequent operation of the motor being in the ordinary manner. It is obvious that this starting device can be applied to a stationary motor of'the nature described.
Havingthus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. The combination with an internal combustion motor having an exhaust furnished with two outlets, of a valve movably mounted in said exhaust, for controlling the flow of fluid therethrough, and a second valve actuated by the opening movement of said first mentioned valve to close one of said outlets.
2. The combination with an internal combustion motor having an. exhaust pipe furnished with a branch outlet, and a storage tank connected with said outlet of a shaft journaled in said exhaust pipe'and having a valve member designed to close said branch ()lllltifet, and means'forlop'erating said valve s a t.
3. The combination-with an internal combustion motor having an exhaust furnished with a branch outlet, a tank ,connected with said outlet'and with the ,flu-id' supply-pf said motor by a pipehaving a normally closed valve, of a duplex valve within saidtexhuast and having an actuating member extending from said exhaust, and rotatable means for operating said valve actuating means.
4. The combination with an internal com bustion motor having an exhaust furnished said valve shaft and having a cam, of a shaft journaled in bearings and having means adapted to act res ectively against the valve: stem of the supp y valve and against said cam of the exhaust valve shaft arm to actuate said members against the pressure of their respective springs.
