To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that l, Grouse Vi. Bnrrron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Combined Cigar Lighter and Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

it is the object of the present invention to provide a combined cigar lighter and cutter so constructed that while normally only sufficient fuel is supplied to the burner to produce a small jet of flame, actuation of the cutter will result in the supply of fuel being materially increased, so that a longer jet will be produced, and lighting of the cigar, the tip of which has been removed by the cutter, will more readily be accom plished.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the cutter of the device that the severed tips will not clog in the mechanism thereof, but will be readily discharged soon as removed from the cigar.

still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the connection between the fuel supply controlling valve and the cutter mechanism may be. adjusted so that the jet of flame may be properly regulated.

in the drawings, the device is shown as being in the nature of a lamp, the fuel supply pipe of which supports the cigar cutting mechanism of the device, and has interposed in it the valve for controlling the jet of flame, and of the lamp, the base is inclicated by the numeral 10, the fuel supply pipe by the numeral 11, the globe or chimney by the numeral 12, the burner by the numeral 13, and the gallery for supporting the burner or chimney by the numeral 1 1. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, this gallery includes the usual globe-engaging fingers 15, which, however, differ from the fingers ordinarily found on such devices, in asmuch as they do not carry set screws for clamping the globe in place upon the gallery, it being removably, though firmly, held in this position by means of a spring pressed pin 16, which is carried by the gallery and engages at one end against the lower edge or flange of the globe.

The fuel supply tube 11 of the lamp is formed or provided with a laterally disposed or off-set barrel 17, and above the barrel with a sleeve 18, and this sleeve 18 is formed, at its forward side, with a boss or extension 19, having a conical opening 20 formed axially therein for the purpose of receiving the tip end of a cigar to be clipped. The barrel 17 is closed at its upper end, as indicated by the numeral 21, except for an opening 22, through which is slidably engaged the stem 23 of a cylindrical tubular cutter 24:, and this stem has threaded or otherwise fixed upon its lower end, a head or collar 25, and has disposed upon it, between the said head and the closed end 21 of the barrel, a spring 26, which normally exerts a tendency to lower the stem and cause the lower end 27 of the cutter proper to seat against the upper face of the closed upper end 21 of the barrel, the downward movement of the cutter and its stem being in this manner limited. The cutter has a substantially cir cular cutting edge 28 at its upper end, and, upon upward reciprocatory movement of the cutter in the sleeve 18, it being understood that its upper end projects into the sleeve (see Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings), the cutting edge 28 will pass the opening 20 in the extension 19 of the sleeve 18, and will shear off the tip end of a cigar inserted into the said opening. As stated, this cutter 24 is tubular, and, in order to permit ready discharge of the severed cigar tips, through an opening 29, formed in the sleeve 18, the said cutter is provided with a notched or cut away portion 30, which registers with the said opening 29 upon reciprocation of the cutter to sever a cigar tip end inserted in the opening 20.

Interposed in the fuel supply pipe 11 is a rotatable plug valve 31, having a passage 32 formed in its side, through which the gas may flow to the burner 13, and fixed upon the stem of the valve 31 at one side of the supply pipe 11, is an arm 33, carrying a finger piece 34 at its extremity, which may be depressed for the purpose of turning the valve to admit the fuel to the burner.

In order that the cutter 24 may be actuated simultaneously with the opening of the valve 31, a head 35 is fixed upon the other end of the valve 31, by means of a set screw 36, which is threaded through the head and bears against the said end of the valve, and this head is formed or provided with a finger 37, carrying a laterally projecting stud 38 at its extremity, the said stud working in a seat or recess 39, formed in the cutter adjacent the lower end of the body thereof.

From the foregoing description of the in vention, it will be understood that upon depression of the finger piece 34 upon the arm 33, the valve 31 will be rocked to open position, so as to increase the size of the flame jet at the burner 13, by supplying a greater quantity of fuel to the said burner, and that simultaneously, the finger 37 will be swung up, thereby lifting the cutter 24 bodily against the tension of the spring 26, and causing its cutting edge 28 to pass the cigar tip receiving opening 20 in the extension 19 of the sleeve 18, whereby the tip of a cigar inserted in the said opening will be severed, it being understood of course that the finger piece 34 is held in depressed position until the cigar has been disengaged from the said opening 20 and has been lighted.

it will be further understood, in connection with the invention, that the valve 31 is so arranged as to supply a very small quantity of fuel constantly to the burner 13, so as to produce a very small flame jet, but that, upon depression of the finger-piece 34, and the consequent opening of the valve 31, more fuel will be supplied, and the jet will be increased, so as to permit of ready lighting of the cigar, the tip of which has been removed by manipulation of the cutter 24, and, in order that the flame jet may be properly regulated, the set screw 36 may be loosened and the heat 35 adjusted upon the valve 31 until the proper range of movement of the valve with respect to the cutter 24 has been attained.

It will further be understood that the cutter mechanism of the device may be supported upon some base or support other than the base 10 herein shown and that the invention is not limited to the specific means illustrated for actuating the cutter 24.

In a device of the class described, a support, a sleeve carried by the support, said sleeve being fromed with a cigar tip receiving opening and an opening for the discharge of the severed tips, a substantially cylindrical cutter mounted to work in said sleeve and provided with a cutting edge adapted to pass the first mentioned opening upon movement of the cutter, and with a notched or cut away portion which registers with the last mentioned opening, and means whereby the cutter may be actuated.

2. In a device of the class described, a support, a sleeve carried by the said support,

.the said sleeve beingvformed with a cigartip receiving opening and substantially opposite to the opening with an opening for the discharge of the severed tip, a substantially cylindrical cutter mounted to work in said sleeve and provided with a cutting edge adapted to pass the first mentioned opening upon movement of the cutter, and with a notched or cut away portion which registers with the last mentioned opening, and means whereby the cutter may be actuated.
