The nat-ure of my invention consists in the appli'- eation of an additional locking-device to my improved umbrella and parasol-runner, which was patented June 22, 1869.

When the umbrella isolosed, the fastening-spring in the umbrella-handle passes up through the slot e into the chamber b, and the umbrella is thereby locked.

When I wish to open the umbrella, I partially withdraw the tube c, as shown in g. 5. This operation slides the tube down until the upper end of the slot e comes in contact with and depresses the fasteningspring .q, thereby releasing thel runner, or unlocking the umbrella,

In order to make my'umbrella still more secure, I apply an additional locking-device, which consists of the spring. g, knob h, slot. i, catch j, pins' k and l, rivet m, key-hole n, and key o. It does not require the key to lock the umbrella with this additional lockingiA device, but it is done by simplysliding the knob h down until the catch j drops into the slot e, in the tube c, as shown in fig. 8. This 'operation locks the runner so that the tube c cannot be withdrawn without the aid ofthe key.

To unlock the runner, I apply the key andturn it round until it raises the catch j clear from the tube c, and with the other hand slide the knob up, as shownin figs. 2 and 5, then the tube c may be withdrawn and the runner released fromthe spring q. v

By having'a projection on the spring g for the key to Work against, .the spring may be thrown back and forth with the key aloneg It would not usually be necessary to use theadditional locking-device, for if a person unacquainted withl this runner should attempt to open the umbrella, he

would first'very naturally slide the' knobh down to the l bottom of the slot t', but this operation efl'ectually locks the runner, so that it cannot be unlocked without the key.
