Description

W. E. ELLIOTT.
COMBINED GHEGK AND SEAL. APPLIGATION FILED MAR.12,1907.
Patented Dem, 1909.
Ma ma- 55 v ered at its sides from the lateral extension itn' RAPIDS, MICHIGANi To all whoi' n 'it may? con-och:
Be it known 'thatl, 5W1LLIAM E. .Eiinio'r'r,
a citizen of the UnitedStates of America,
residing atGrand Rapids, in the'county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Checks and Seals; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enablezothers skilledsi-rr theiart to which it appertainsl't o make aiidfiusegthe same. 4
My invention relates t9 =impi'ovclnents in a combined. cheokeand'sealianda its object.is
to provide a cheapand convenient device that shall serve both as a check and a seal and thus secure the article uponwhichit may be placed against any opening of the same without breaking the so and at provide the device with a various' new and,
the same .time" provide a suitable check in duplicate for delivery to the owner of the artlcle upon whlch the sealisnsed, and to useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being bad to the' accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1. is a plan view of a device em bodying my invention; Fig. 2. a longitudinal section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.; Fig. 3. the end view of a trunk .with my device a plied thereto; Fig. 4. an
enlarged sectiona detail of the same as shown in Fig. 3.; Fig. 5. a detail of the tag holding portion of the device; Fig. 6. an enlarged detail of the retaining means shown on the line 6-6 of'Fig. 1; and, Fig. 7. an enlarged vertical sectional" detail of ,the. locking means in locked position.
Like numbers refer to like of the figu'res.
1 represents a strip of material parts in all referably of sheet metal provided with a ateral enlargement 2 near one end for the purpose of holding a paper tag 4 on which may be printed or written any desired inscription,
and also a number corresponding to the number of the seal.
To (secure the tag in place, and ermit of inserting the same, the edges of t e lateral enlargement are folded as at 3 forming grooves to receive the edges of the tag. Near one end of this ta is a perforation 5 through which is inserte the stri strip is bent or off-set. where it extends through this opening as at 14 and is sev- 1, which of bein "Inserted and bent, as indicated at 18 in ig.
1 passed through the opening 5 and then bent around beneath the edgeiof the tag, the latter will be securely retained in place. 6 is'a locking pin which also Serves as a rivet to connect a transverse member 7 to the strip 1, which member is extended a, sufiicient distance to be folded upon itself with} its. end opposite the pin 6, which endis provided with a retainer inclosed in a case 8 to receive and hold the end of the pin. This pin and retainer are preferably of the construction shown in my co-pen ing a .plication for improvement in metallic seas,
filed. March 20,1907, Serial No. 363,363, in which a series of resilient members 19 having hook-shaped yielding ends are rovided. in the case 8, which .surrountLan en age curely retain the in in the case. The strip 7 is also opposite y extended as at9 and partially evered adjacent to the strip 1, whereby'a etachable check is formed upon which is stam ed the number of the check, a cor respon ing number being stamped upon the strip .1 as at 11. This check 9 when the seal is used is detached and delivered as a duplicate check to the owner of the article to which the device is attached. Near the other end of the strip 1,1 provide a series of perforations 10 through one of which when the seal is used, the pin 6 is inserted.
In using this device upon a trunk, I prewith the tag holding member op osite the handle 16 of the trunkand on t e outside thereof, and with the longer portion of the strip 1 extending within the handle and thence upward between the band 17 and the body of the trunk-and with its erforated end bent outward ,andkibwnwar with the pin 6 extended throgg'hciie of the holes or openings 10, andithe' transverse member '7 folded with the retainer case 8 attached to the end of the in 6. The device thus serves to securely sea the trunk and at the same time performs the function of a check.
Obviously this seal may be applied to a great variety of articles having any two members that may be attached to each other by means of the seal, or it may be passed around-any article such as a bag, thus forming a tie for the same. Various other analothe shouldered end 20 of the pin 6 an sefer to apply the same, as shown in Fig. 4.
ing
gous uses'will be'foulid for the device as ber adapte to receive and retain the pin.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a strip of sheet metal having a'lateral enlargement intermediate its ends provided with folde d edges, one endbein provided wlth a series of openings and also eing severed at its sides from the lateral enlargement, a locking pin fixed in the other end, a transverse member secured to the end having the pin, a case on the end of said extension adapted to receive the pin and means for retaining the pin within the case.
3.'A device of the class described, comprising a strip of metal having perforations near one end and a lockin .pm near the. other end, and a lateral en argement havin folded edges to' hold 'a' tag, a tag provi ed with an opening WITBCGIVG the strip,
and a transverse member on the strip-having retaining means ada ted to receive the lock ing pin and retain t e same.
4. A combined seal and'check, comprising a strip of metal havin a lateral enlargement provided with f0 ded edges to form grooves, said enlargement being partially severed at the sides of said strip, a tag in the grooves and having an opening to receive the strip, a locking pin near one end of the strip, a series of openings near the other, end of the strip, a transverse member secured by the pin, retaining means on said member to receive and retain the pin, a detachable check having a number thereon, and a corresponding number on the strip and tam The combination of a metallic sea comprising a strip of metal, means for sealing its ends to each other, said stri having a lateral enlargement having to ded edges forming grooves to receive a tag, a ta 1nserted in said grooves and provided wit an openingto receive the strip, and a detachable portion to said seal to serve as a check.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence-of two witnesses.
