Description

G. A. GONG-DON.
SIN EW EXTRAGTOR. APPLIOATION FILED JULY 17, 19,09.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. GONGIDON, OF WEST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SINEW-EXTBACTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Common, of West Somerville, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in sinew-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sinew-extractors, and has for its object to construct a simple device adapted to be manually operated, which may be supported on the wall, and when not in use may be arranged to occupy but little space.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sinewextractor embodying this invention, the parts being arranged in out-of-use position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4: are details showing the parts in operative position, and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail to be referred to.
a represents a base which is adapted to be secured to the wall by screws or other wise. To said base a foot holder is secured by screws or otherwise, which, as here shown, consists of a bracket 5 comprising a base and an arm projecting therefrom having a bifurcated end. Said arm projects forward and upward, and the space between the fingers of its forked end portion is made wide enough to receive the bony part of the leg, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4;; and furthermore, the adjacent faces or edges of said fingers, which form the opposite sides of the legreceiving space, are beveled, as shown in Fig. 5, thereby providing for holding the leg more securely by holding it obliquely, and also providing a sharp edge on the upper side of the lower finger of the forked end portion over which the leg may be easily broken.
0 represents a claw, and c a lever to which it is attached. Said lever is pivoted to the base a, at 0 and, it will be observed, that said pivotal connection is arranged below and at one side of the foot-holder. The claw 0 is arranged on the lever 0 near its pivot and projects laterally from that side thereof adjacent the foot-holder, so that when the lever is raised on its pivot, from a Specification of Letters Patent.

vertical to a horizontal position, or thereabout, see Fig. 3, said claw will engage the leg below the foot-holder, and then as the lever is moved downward into the position shown in Fig. 4, the fleshy part of the leg will be drawn down while the bony part will remain fixed in the foot-holder, resulting in the sinews being extracted from the fleshy part of the leg.
Ordinarily the device will be used but a few moments at a time, hence it is desirable to provide for compactly arranging the parts when not in use and this is accomplished by permitting the lever to occupy a vertical position, close to or against the wall, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it being at such time suspended from its pivot. The lever 0 may be quite long without being cumbersome, and as the claw is arranged close to its pivot a powerful leverage is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sinew extractor consisting of a base, a forwardly extended foot-holder attached thereto having a forked end portion, a handlever pivoted at its upper end to said base, below and at one side of said foot-holder, which is movable on its pivot from a vertical to a horizontal position, and a claw extended laterally from said lever at a point intermediate its length on that side adjacent the foot-holder, which engages the leg below the foot-holder when the hand-lever is raised to a horizontal position and operates to separate the leg from the foot and extract the sinew as the hand-lever is returned to vertical position, substantially as described.
2. A sinew extractor consisting of a base, a forwardly extended foot-holder attached thereto having a forked end portion, the adjacent faces of the fingers of said end portion being beveled, a hand-lever pivoted at its upper end to said base, below and at one side of said foot-holder, which is movable on its pivot from a vertical to a horizontal position, and a claw extended laterally from said lever at a point intermediate its length 1n testimony whereof, I have signed my on that side adjacent the foot-holder which l name to this specification, in the presence of 10 engages the leg below the foot-holder when two subscribing witnesses.
the hand-lever is raised to a horizontal oi sition and operates to separate the leg fr dni i GEORGE GONGDON' the foot and extract the sinew as the handl/Vitnesses: lever is returned to vertical position, sub- B. J. NoYEs, stantially as described. H. B. DAVIS.
