WALTER P. CHOITZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SMOKE-CONSUMING ATTACHMENT FOB FURNACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Application filed May 1'7, 1909. Serial No. 496,616.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER P. 0110112, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Attachments for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an appliance for attachment to furnaces whereby a regulated supply of air may be admitted through the fire door of the furnace to furnish sufficient air for the complete combustion of the smoke.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a furnace equipped with an appliance embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the furnace door showing the device in use.
The appliance comprises a rod 1 having inwardly bent and flattened ends 2 secured to the face of the furnace just above the furnace fire door. On the rod 1 is a slidable and rotatable finger 3 secured thereto by means of the eye 4: bent over the rod.
In use the finger 3 may be adjusted along the rod 1 to any desired position and then inserted between the door 5 and the door frame 6 to keep the door partially ajar for the admission of air. It will be seen that by adjusting the finger 3 close to the hinge of the door, the door may be held Widely ajar and that by adjusting the finger 3 to a position farthest away from the hinge the door will be held but slightly ajar. By placing the finger 3 at intermediate positions the extent of the opening of the door may be regulated to suit varying conditions and to supply sufficient air for the complete combustion of the smoke. If desired the finger 3 may be swung upwardly and out of operation as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect this may be modified somewhat without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction, but wish to avail myself of such changes and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a furnace of a support secured over the fire door thereof and a finger slidably mounted on said support and adapted to be inserted between the door and the door frame to keep the door ajar, substantially as described. I
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rod having inwardly bent and flattened ends secured over a furnace door, and a finger having an eye bent over said rod and adapted to be inserted between the door and door frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of. two subscribing witnesses.
