PENCIL-SHABPENER.
Application filed February 18, 1909. Serial No. 478,580.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT L. MCBRIDE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
functions of a knife and-eraser, that shall be adapted for ready connection witha lead-pencil, and in such manner as not to add any objectionable length thereto, and which shall be simple in construction, efficient and durable in use, andlornamental in appearance.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,- the same consists in a novel construction and combination of parts of a pencil-sharpener, as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts :Figure 1 is a view of a leadpencil equipped with the device of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a' View in side elevation, partly in section, showing the pencilsharpener applied to a pencil. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the combined knife and eraser.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a lead-pencil, which is herein shown as polygonal in cross section, although it may be of circular contour and serve the same purpose. Slidably mounted on one end of the pencil is a sheath 2, which serves to hold the novelty combined with the ncil, and also to revent the knife from lnflicting accidenta l injury to the person carryin it. This is designed to engage the penci with suflicient frictional grip to retain it and the combined knife and eraser a ainst accidental detachment. The sheat may be either a seamless or a s lit tube, as preferred, the latter constructlon being, in some cases, advantageous.
The combined knife and eraser comprises a sleeve 3, provided intermediate its ends with a circumferential bead 4:, to limit its insertion into the sheath. One end, 5, of the tain a rubber eraser 6 properly combined therewith, and the other end 7 is provided with a tapering'extension or socket 8, that l is preferably rectangular in cross section for the greater portion of its length to receive the tang of the blade or knife 9, which may be of the'style shown or otherwise, as' preferred or found of advantage. The tang may be held in the socket in any preferred manner, either by a rivet, by solder, or by cement, as may be found most convenient As above pointed out, it is one of the objects of the invention to obviate'any objectionable increase in the length of a pencil tipped with the novelty of the present invention, and this is secured by providing the butt end of the pencil with a longitudinal cleft or slot 10 of suflicientextent to house the blade. The slot will of course be open at its sides, butthis is of no moment,
- asthe sheath extends beyond the cleft end of the pencil and the inner wall of the slot a sufficient distance to prevent any. possibility of the knife inflicting injury to the person carryin it. Normally, the knife will be housed wlthin the pencil, thus leaving the eraser exposed for use, as shown in Fig. 2, but when the knife is required, the position of the sleeve is reversed to present the knife, as shown in Fig. 1. If preferred, the pencil may be dispensed with, and the sheath and combined pencil sharpener and eraser be used as a convenient implement for ofiice use.
I claim The combination of a pencil having a lon- 'gitudinal slot or cleft in its end, a sheath fitting on the end of the pencil and longer than said slot, a sleeve fitting within the sheath and provided with a circumferential bead adapted to en age adjacent the end of the same, one end 0 the sleeve being adapted as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signa- 105 ture in the presence of two witnesses.
' DWIGHT McBRIDE.
Witnesses HARLEY F. NEWELL,
MARY R. HOLT.
