PATENT DAVID I-I. WOODMAN, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
RIBBON-FASTENER AND SALES-INDEX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Davm H. IVooDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon- Fasteners and Sales-Indexes, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to provide a device, that may be easily and quickly attached to the paper box or block within a bolt of ribbon and on which the ribbon is wound, that will hold the ribbon in place. And a further objectI is to supply an index that will show the amount of ribbon that has been taken or cut off. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Figure l is a view of one side of the device as attached to a block of ribbon. Fig. 2 is a view of the other side not so attached. F ig. 3 is an enlarged section on line m, of Fig. l.
The two disks 2 are similar in construction except that one has a dial thereon, and they have the pins 3 and 3 attached at right angles thereto to permit the device being secured on the ribbon-block l, by inserting the said pins 3 and 3 into the ends of the ribbonblock. On the side of each disk opposite the pins is a smaller disk et, and secured on or integral with the outer side of each of said disks f-l, is a diametrically disposed tube 5. Vithin said tubes are inserted the legs of the wire U-shaped bail 6 that holds the ribbon in place. On the face of the side opposite the pins of one of the disks 2, are formed in a circle concentric with said disk, figures from l to l() with marks indicating one-fourth, one-half and three-fourths ofthe distance between each figure, in the form of a dial. Between this dial and the disk 4 on that side, is placed and held the index 7. This index 7 is attached between said disks 4L and 2 by means of a thimble 10 having outwardly extended ianges embracing the index 7 and the adjacent disk 2. By means of Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led January 29, 1909.

serial No. 475,023.
j the pin 8 near the point of the index the latter can be turned to any position on the dial. On said disk 2 that has the dial thereon and proj ecting at right angles thereto is a pin 9 to prevent the index 7 from being turned in the wrong direction. For ribbon of different widths the horizontal part of the bail 6 is made of diiferent lengths.
The device is used by attaching the disks to the ribbon-block by inserting the pins 3 and 3 as indicated hereinbefore. Then place the bail 6 in position by inserting the ends within the tubes 5. The horizontal part of said bail 6 will hold the ribbon from becoming unwound, unless so desired, and the ends of said bail 6 when inserted in the tubes 5 will hold the ribbon securely on the block. The ribbon may be unwound at any length by pulling out the end, the bail 6 being pushed within or through the tubes 5 as the ribbon is unwound. The index 7 is then turned on the dial to indicate the amount of ribbon cut oli'. The amount of ribbon on an ordinary bolt as put up by the factories being ten yards, the amount cut off being indicated by the index, the salesman has always the remaining yards of ribbon indicated, for his information as well as for the invoice clerk. Each of the disks 4, with its tube 5, is rotatably secured centrally of the adjacent disk 2 by means of a thimble 11 having a flange extending outwardly from the center and between the disk 2 and the ribbon bolt.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a pair of disks having fastening means and central openings, a pair of tubes extending across the faces of said disks, each of the tubes having a centrally attached thimble projecting laterally therefrom and rotatably secured in the adj acent disk opening, and a U-shaped bail having its legs slidably fitted in said tubes.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a ribbon block, of a pair of disks having means to secure the same to the opposite faces of the block, a
pair of smaller disks (zo-axially connected to I tioned having indicia coperating With said the rst mentioned disks and rotatable l index, for the purpose set forth. 1C around the axis thereof, a pair of tubes eon- In testimony whereof I have aliiXed my neeted to the smaller disks, a U-shaped bail signature in presence of two Witnesses.
having` its legs slidably mounted in said DAVID H. VOODMAN. tubes, and an index rotatable around the itnessesz axis aforesaid between one bolt disk and the A. H. CUTRIGHT,
smaller adjacent disk, the bolt disk just men- PERGY HALLEN.
