To all whom it may cancer "n5 Be it known that I, Josnrn G. l/VATANABE, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at St. Pauhin the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specili cation.

My invention relates to improvements in pencil holders, its object being to provide an improved form of holder for pencils by which the point of the pencil is protected when not in use, and WillCll may be remov ably secured in the wearers pocket and thereby revented from dropping out, and by means of which also a much shorter penoil can be used than with the ordinary holder.

To this end my invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter described and c aimed.

The holder A is mudeotf suitable sheet metal cylindricallybent and longitudinally split at 2 to allow it to spring to different sizes of pencils. Extending rearwardly from one side of the holder is the handle 3 outwardly curved and having its free end bent inwardly to form a spring clamp against the side of the pencil so as to grip the intermediate wall 4: of the pocket as shown in Fig. 3. The handle 3 is preferably formed with a strengthenin rib 5. The

sides of the inner end of t e handle areseparated from the holder by slots 6 so as to assist in the sprin action of the handle. The opposite end of the holder is tapered and formed with slots 8, the ends 9 of the ta ered portion intermediate of the slots being cut outwardly, constituting a central opening 10 through which the point ll of thb pencil 12 will rotrude in use as shown i means for preventing slipping of t e fingers.

The pencil will be held in the holder as shown in Fig. i and when not being used will be drawn rearwardly to brin the point of the pencil entirly within the holder. When it is desired to use the pencil, the pencil may be forced forward to allow its oint to project beyond the tapered end 0 the holder, as shown. along one side allows it to be sprung to fit different sizes of pencils. As the pencil be comes too short to rest against the hand in use, the sprin handle 3 will serve as a continuation of t 1e holder and rest a ainst the hand as shown in Fig. 1, thus a lowing a much shorter pencil than otherwise to be used. In holding the pencil in the ocket the front wall of the pocket may be sipped into the slots between the handle and holder as shown in Fig. 3, and the handle will form a spring clamp preventing the holder and pencil from dropping from the pocket.

I claim as my invention:

A pencil holder comprisingatubular body portion having a longitudinal slot to render it resilient, an annular rib near one end of said bod portion, a tapered portion integral with said body portion beyond said annular rib, said tapered portion being longitudinally slotted, integral outwardly turned petals on said tapered portion to protect the point, and a rearwardly extending bowed portion integral with said body portion and stamped tllmTUfl'OllllOSPI'VG as a clamp and as a support for the pencil from the hand.
