OTTO RANGNOW, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE BUREAU.
tlP-Mdmtl.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro RANenow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Innprovements in Portable Bureaus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a portable bureau and the object of my invention is to construct a portable bureau having a front panel or door which may be opened and removed from the body of the bureau.
A further object of my invention is to provide the interior of the bureau with drawers and receptacles which will be accessible and the drawers removable, when the door is removed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide th door with side and top edges to strengthen the same and to provide the body of the bureau with cut away portions corresponding; to the edges upon the door so that the drawers will be more readily accessible.
A still further object of my invention is to make the door of smaller dimensions than the front of the body so that the front of the lower portion of the body may be made with solid rectangular corners to strengthen the bureau body.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a panel in the front of the bureau body below the bottom line of the door so that the lower portion of the bureau may be provided with drawers and a still further object of my invention is to provide means for attaching the door to the body so that said door may be readily removed from the latter.
In the accompanying drawings in which like references refer to like parts: Figure 1. is a perspective view of my improved portable bureau; Fig. 2. is a plan view of my improved portable bureau; Fig. 3. is an end elevation of Fig. 2; Fig. 4:. is a front elevation of Fig. 2; Fig. 5. is a front elevation of the portable bureau, with the door removed and the front panel open; Fig. 6. is a transverse section on line 66 Fig. Fig. 7. is a sectional perspective view of the door, detached; Fig. 8. is a vertical longitudinal section on line 8--8 Fig. 2; and, Fig. 9. is a horizontal section on line 9-9 Fig. 4:.
In the drawings 1 represents thebody Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1909.
Patented Feb. 1, 151 10.
Serial No. 489,992.
consisting of the top 2, the ends 3 and a the bottom 5, the back 6 and the front 7.
The door 10 consists of the front portion 12, the top edge 13 and the end edges 14:
and 15.
The top 2 and the ends 3 and 41- of the body are cut away to provide for the top 12 and ends 14.- and 15, of the door, so that when the door is in place upon the body. the bureau will be rectangular in form and the door when constructed in this way may be provided with the usual corner irons and will have sutlicient strength to withstand the strain to which trunks are usually subjected.
The door 10 is provided upon its edges with valancestrips 17 to cover the joints between the door and the body. The bottom edge of the front portion 12 of the door is also provided with a valance-strip 18, to 1 protect the joint between the bottom of the door and the front panel 7 of the body. The door is provided with fixtures 22, having dowel-pins 23, which fit into correspondino,- fixtures 24 secured upon the body. Said fixtures 2 1 have sockets 25 formed therein to receive said dowel-pins. The door is also provided with one member of a lock 26, and the other member of said lock is attached to the body. The door is also provided with handles 27 and spring clasps 28.
The front portion 7 of the body, below the bottom line of the door, is rigidly secured at the ends of the body to form solid. rectangular corners and thereby strengthen the body.
A panel 30 is provided in the front por tion 7 of the body and secured thereto by hinges 31, so that said panel may be opened to have access to the drawers in the bottom of the bureau. The hinged panel 30 is held closed by hooks 32 and the top edge of the panel is secured by the valance-strip 18, when the door is in place upon the body.
Three drawers are provided which rest upon the bottom 5 of the body. The center drawer 34L is adapted to be withdrawn through the space formed for the hinged panel 30 and the drawers 35 and 36 are adapted to be drawn into the space in the center of the body provided for the drawer 34, when the latter is removed from the body and the said drawers 35 and 36 may be removed from the body through the space formed in the front portion 7 of the body for the panel 30. The drawers 34, 35 and 36 completely fill the space in the bottom portion of the body, so that said drawers cannot move when the panel 30 is closed.
Cross-pieces 38 and 39 are secured in the body and located at either side of the center drawer 34, to support the drawer 40, which latter is adapted to slide upon said crosspieces and be withdrawn from the bod when the door 10 is removed. The said cross-pieces form means for bracing the front portions 7 of the body and give additional strength to the latter.
The drawers 41 and 42 are supported upon cleats 43 secured to the ends 3 and 4 of the body.
It will be seen that when the door is removed from the body, the drawers 40, 41 and 42 are accessible and may be readily removed. By opening the hinged panel 30 the center drawer 84 is accessible and when said drawer 34 is removed from the body the drawers 35 and 36 may be drawn into the space formed for said drawer 34 and then said drawers 35 and 36 may be withdrawn from the body.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a portable bureau, the combination of a body, said body having a rigid front portion inclosing the lower part of said body and forming rigid rectangular corners, said front lower portion having a panel in the central portion of the same and a door adapted to inclose the front of said body and hold said panel in the closed position.
2. In a portable bureau, the combination of a body, said body having a front portion forming rigid rectangular corners upon said body, said front port-ion having a space formed in the center of the same,'a panel fitted into said space formed in said front portion, cross-pieces secured in said body to strengthen the said front portion adjacent to the said space formed in the said front portion for said panel and a door to inclose said body above the line of said front portion.
3. In a portable bureau, the combination of a body, said body having a front portion forming rigid rectangular lower corners upon said body, a panel formed in the central part of said front portion of said body, a drawer of less width than the space formed in said front portion for said panel and adapted to be withdrawn through said space, and a door to inclose the said body above the top line of said front portion.
4. In a portable bureau, the combination of a body, said body having a front portion forming rigid rectangular lower corners upon said body, a panel formed in the central part of said front portion, drawers in said body located at either end of the same and adapted to be withdrawn through the space formed in said front portion for said panel and a door to inclose the said body above the line of said front portion.
5. In a portable bureau, the combination of a body, said body having a front portion forming rigid rectangular lower corners upon said body, a panel formed in the central part of said front portion, drawers in said body located at either end of the same and adapted to be withdrawn through the space formed in said front portion for said panel, a drawer located between the said drawers located at the end of said body and adapted to be withdrawn through the space formed in said front portion for said panel and a door to inclose the said body above the line of said front portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTTO RANGNOIV.
