To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PERCY EWING 11. ms and James JOLLY, Britlsh subjects, re-
siding respectively at Southport, county of Lancaster, England, and Bolton, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combing- Machines for Cotton Fibers, of which the the detaching rollers in a slide capable of moving to and fro upon the fixed frame to cause them to approach to and recede from the top comb and nipper. (b) Placingthe two leather detaching rollers upon two steel detaching rollers journaled in the said hearing, the steel detaching rollers moving to and from the nipper. (o) Causing the top leather detaching roller to rise and fall approximately vertically in front-of the top comb as the steel rollers move to and from it and the nipper. (cl) Pivoting the top jaw of the nipper below the feed roller and below the center about which the lower jaw oscillates, and carryin the bracket below the feed rollers, and Fe) pivoting the top comb on a center below its blade so that it may recede from the top detaching roller as it rises.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which suflicientof one head of a comber is shown to illustrate the invention.

The detaching rollers are carried in a sliding hearing A moved to and fro by an eccentric rod A operated by an eccentric on the cam shaft.

By'this. construction the twodetaching rollersB and Dtake hold of the fibers from the nipper after such have been combed by the cylinder and during the advance of the roller B toward the nipper. The roller B thus takes the place of a segment upon the cylinder to detach the fiber and draw it through the top comb. WVe are'thus enabled to commence detaching While the rollers B and D are moving toward the nippers, the rotation of the rollers detaching and drawing the fibers through the top comb during their forward movement.

The ordinary detaching or lifting lever is dispensed with and as the detaching rollers work without reference to the segment of the cylinder A it may also be dispensed with if desired.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a Heilman combing machine, the combination, with the top comb and nipper, of a pair of slides movable toward and from the same, detaching rollers journaled in the slides, a rotating member, and a member connecting said rotating member and one of said slides, for operating the latter.
2. In a Heilman combing machine, the combination, with the top comb and nipper, of a pair of slides, steel detaching rollers journaled therein, and mechanism for moving the slides toward and from the comb and nlpper.
3. In a Heilman combing machine the combination with the nipper and two steel detaching rollers of a sliding bearing in which the rollers are journaled, a leather roller in rolling contact with each of the steel rollers, a bearing d fixed to the stationary frame for the top leather roller by which it is caused to reclprocate in an approximately vertical plane substantially as described.
4. In a Heilman combing machine, the combination with a sliding bearing and a pair of steel detaching rollers journaled therein, of a leather roller arranged for co operation with each steel roller, a pair of feed rollers, a lower nipper jaw, brackets by which said jaw is carried, and a top nipper jaw pivotally connected with said brackets below the feed rollers.
5. In a Heilman combing machine the combination with the feed rollers the nipper and the detaching rollers, of a sliding bearing in which the detaching rollers are j ournaled, a cam to reciprocate the sliding hearing, two leather rollers in rolling contact with the steel rollers and a top comb provided with pivots below the feed rollers and below the blade of the comb so that the comb blade recedes from the detaching rollers as it rises and approaches them as it falls substantially as described.
