Description
duidt gittata @anni @emite Letters Patent No. 94,702, dated September 14, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-CLAMPS."
The Schedine referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bl. BLAoKsToNE, of Warren, in
thecount'jT of Jo Daviess, and State oi'rlllinois, have invented an Improved Saw-Clamp and Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon, making a part of this description, 'in Which- Figure lis a perspective representation of my iuventiou.
Figure 2, an elevation of one of the pivoted arms of the clamp, removed from the otherparts.
The nature ofthe present invention consists in coustructing a clamp, or vise, which has two upright standards, provided with lugs, for the convenience of fastening the device to a bench, and with a iixed jaw at the upper ends, which, with a movable jaw iixed to the upper ends of arms pivoted to the lowerends of the aforesaid standards, is used as a saw-clamp, or vise, as the nat-ure of any particular case may require. The standards and pivot'cd arms havingcross-trees rigidly attached to them, through which a screw-bolt is put, may be so operated, by loosening or tightening a nut on the rod, as to open and close the jaws.
A A represent standards,` which have lugs B B, cross-piece H, and a jaw, J, cast solid to them,sa.d lugs being used for the convenience of fastening the standards to a bench, and the jaw as one side of a clamp with which an article is held.
C G F, figs. 1 and 2, represent elbow-arms, which are placed on the inside of the standards A, and have' their lowerends pivoted to them, as shown at D, fig. l. These arms have cast solid to them a jaw, I, Vand `cross-piece E, said jaw forming the other part of the clama-and the cross-piece providing means, together with the cross-piece H, for placing a screw-bolt, L, iu position', whereby the jaw I may be opened or closed.
The object of making the arms O F with au elbow G is, that they will stand so far from over the pivots D as to open the jaw I, when the nut M is loosened, without the use of` a Spring; also for the better holding of a saw.
In manufacturing the device, I use malleable iron,
and prefer toliave the jawscase-hardened or chilled, only two patterns being required to make the cast-ings, which need have no machine-work done to them except the drilling.
A clamp and vise constructed as above described will be found very convenient, both ior farmers and mechanics use, and supply a want, rather than supplant another device.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Vl'hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- Y The combination of the' iixed standards A, jaws I J, elbow-arms C FG, and 4cross-trees E H, said arms being pivoted lto the inside of the standards, all constructed and arranged and operating as described.
B. BLACKSTONE.
