COMBINATION-UNDERGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
Application filed May 6, 1909. Serial No. 494,402.
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLlAN M. Knees, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Undergarments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combination under garment which may be converted at will into a two or three piece garment.
One objectof the invention is to provide a combination under garment known as a three-quarter princess, said garment combining three garments in one and being applicable to the body in one operation and which, when applied, fits smooth and sheathlike without any fullness -at the waist-line or on the hips or stomach to adapt the garment for use with the tight fitting directoire and princess gowns, said garment being convertible to form either a two piece or a three piece garment which is in great demand by high class trade.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as will be more fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a garment spread out and looking toward the inside thereof, arranged for use as a two piece garment comprising corset cover and drawers; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the skirt section, attached and one leg of the drawers open at the seam and the other leg shown completed; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the detached sections ofthe ody portion or waist of the garment arranged in juxtaposition ready for assembling; Fig. 4 1s. a plan view of the blanks from which the drawers legs are formed; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the detachable skirt section. r
In the embodiment illustrated, an under garment 1 is shown composed of a waist or body portion 2, which extends down well below the hips, being of a length known as three-quarter length. Circular drawers legs 3 and 4 are connected to the lower edge of the waistor body section 2, and a circular skirt section 5 detachably connected to the lower edge of the waist section. This waist section 2 is preferably. composed of two main back gores, as 6, connected at 7 to form a center backseam. arm gores, as 8, are attached tot-heback pieces 6 and the free edges thereof are connected to the rear edges of two front side bodies, as 9. Fronts, as 10, are connected to the free edges of the side bodies 9 and are providedwith the usual straight front edges, as 11, adapted to be fastened in any suitable manner, preferably by means of buttons arranged on one side and button holes arranged under a fly on the other side. These gores of the bodysection are shaped to form a smooth tight fitting .corset cover or waist, which, as'above described, extends to a point well below the hips and is constructed to smoothly and tightly fit the figure of the person for whom it is designed.
The drawers legs 3 and 4 are each constructed in circular form similar to a circular skirt, both of the side edges being curved as shown at 12 and 13, one edge being ar-.
Two side backs or under-- one-half the width of the lower edge of. the
corset cover or waist section to provide for the smooth fiat attachment thereof without any fullness at the point of connection.'
The circular skirtsection 5 has the upper edge thereof connected to the lower edge of the back portion of the corset. cover or waist sect-ion preferably by means of buttons carried by the upper edge of saidskirt section which are detachably engaged with button holes formed at the lower edge of said corset cover, preferably adjacent the connection of.
said corset cover with the upper edges of the drawers legs. This skirt section may be of any desired width and in the form shown it extends from a point in alinement with one under-arm seam to a similar pointat-the opposite side of the garment. The opposite sides of this skirtsection are also preferably detachably connected at their lower ends to the lower edge of the drawers legs at points alining with the under-arm seams. By. the use of this skirt section 5, the garment may be quickly and readily converted into a two.
or a three piece garment as desired by the wearer, to form elther a combined corset cover and drawers or a combined corset v cover, drawers and skirt. This skirt section also facilitates the laundrying of the garment, as it may be detached, washed and ironed and then secured in operative position by means of the separable fastening devices.
The curved edges of the drawers legs are preferably faced, as shown at 15, in the ordinary manner and the lower edge of both the skirt section and the drawers legs are preferably finished by a deep rufile or in any other desired manner. The circular form of the drawers legs and skirt section provides ample width and flare to the garment and at the same time provides a reduced upper edge for their points of connection with the lower edge of the corset cover to avoid any fullness at this point.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus I claim is:
A combination under garment comprising a three-quarter tight-fitting open front waist section extending well below the hips, circular drawers-legs having their upper edges connected to the loweredge of the waist section and their opposite side edges curved to fit the wearer, one curved side edge extending substantially in alinement with the open front edge of the waist and the other in alinement with the center of the back of described my invention, what the waist section, and a circular skirt sec- ROLAND C.
