Description

PET-ER A. STEWART, or LUcEsco, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 94,523, datczl'Sqitemller 7, 1869.
IMPROVED GOVERNING--DEVICE FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part ox tne same To all whom it ymay concern Be it known that I. .PETER A. STEWART, of Lncesco, in the county of Westmoreland, and State 0f Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Governor for Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a steam-chest of a steam-engine that the steam in the chest will act on a piston-head, and thereby so operate a valve in the steznn-snpplypipc as that it will regulate the flow of steam into the steam-chest.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invent-ion, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification- Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement in governor for steam-engines.
lligure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, when cut through at line y of iig. 3.
Figure 3 is a top view or plan of the same.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents an ordinary steam-chest of the common slide-valve engine.
The chest A is provided with a chamber, B, in which is placed a piston, C, `to the outer end of which may be attached jointed levers, for operating a valve placed in the steam-supply pipe. The dot-ted lines x will indicate the arrangement ot the jointed levers with relation to the outer end of' the piston C. The jointed levers can befit' so desired, attached to the ordinary ball-governo1" ot' the steam-engine.
D represents :u1 opening in the end of the steamehest foi; the steam of the slide-valve.
As the skilful mecha-nic will readily understand the construction of the several part-s of my improvement from the foregoing description, and by reference to the accompanying drawings, I will therefore proceed to describe the operation of my invention, which is as follows:
rlhe steam enters the steam-chest through the ordinary supplyl-pipe, and as it expands equally in all directions, will press or act ou the end of the piston (Land will thereby force it into the chamber B, which will operate the jointed levers indicated at z, and thereby' so operate the valve, or ball-governor to which they may be attached as to cause the governorvalve in the steam-pipe to close. But if the pressure of steam is not greater in force than is required, the piston C will be forced back by the action ot' the governor-balls, or by other device, and thereby open the valve in the supply-pipe, so as to admit a, full supply of steam into the, steam-chest-A. Ihe skilful mechanic will readily see that the action of the piston O on the jointed levers indicated at d: will depend on the pressure of' steam in steam-chest A, and also that the piston O can be easily `forced back to its normal position by the ordinary hall-governor, or by other niechanical contrivance, which I leave to the judgment ofthe skilful mechanic.
Having thus described the nature'and construction of my improvement,
What I claim as of my invention, is-
The steam-chamber and piston C, in combina-I v tion with the steam-chest A, for operatin'ga governor'- valve in the steam-supply pipe, as herein described. 'PETER A. STEWART.
