' Inventor: l 1 'IL Z5 77 l 274/2067,

, ABRAHAM 'Lmoo'Ln SMITH, or NEW YORK. NY.
CARTON,
To all whom Lt may concern:
Be "it. known that I, Arman-.131 LixcoLx SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America residin at No. 1402 Broadway,
New York city, llew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cartons, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a' box or carton made from a single folded-blank and having an integral closures Itis designed to hold various substances, sucha's foodstuffs, sweetmeats, teas and coffees, spices'and con (liments, somerdrugs and generally speak in'g, all powdered, granulated or comminuted articles that are'to be foundon the shelves of groceries, pharmacies or other stored in the home for use in the pantry,
kitchen or laundry, or for house cleaning,
and kindred purposes. Y I
The main object of the invention is toprovide an improved means whereby ,a c'on=- tainer of the kind above referred to may be opened andclosed at thetop Without tearing of the latter, so'that the container shall have a closure that is permanently available as' Well as easily applied and operated.
A further object is, so to shape and constructthe closurethat it maybe utilized as a scoop, trough or spout by means of which the contents of the container can-be poured'- out, measured or dispensed without spilling and the box securely closed whenever de v body, to provide. across brace 01' rear supsired, thereby insuring" neatness for the.
package and a method of handling it in a folded ready for use, with its lid .or cover tilted upward. Fig. 3 is a side'elevation of the device shown in the preceding fi-gure.
The blank from which ,the. carton is evolved, consists preferably'of a sheet of cardboard, thoughit may be wood veneer or reinforced cloth or other suitable material. v I
tainer', thereby forming guides forthe lid,.
constituting'the, body or most of the. body Specification of Letters Patent. P te t d D63. 2 19031 Application filed September 24, 1908. Serial No. 454,528.
tan ular in form and divided into aralleloa grams, 1, 2, 3, 4, o and t, bystraight lines 7, S, 9, 10 and 11 drawn transverselyofthe body and at right. angles to its longitudinal edges. Four of these parallelograms, namely those numbered 1, 4,5 and (3, are portions exclusively of the body .A, while the par-' allelograms-Q and 3 are formed integral with the pendant- Ca'nd head B,respecti\- ely.
The pendant is-likewise divided into partrade establishments, -or which may be'fallelograms 12 and 13, by transverse lines mentioned. Outside the linesl'f and 18, lie
the triangular portions of the head piece ,which form lateral appendages 19'and 20, the function of which will be presently explained.
Small extensions 1), and- Fare pro- 'vided, one to each principal part.- of 'the blank as follows, to .'witfirst,,the extension' 1) to the head, to afford a reinforcing flap, which upon being turned down and sealed, will strengthen the forward edge of the lid secondly, th e extension E to the port in the' foldcdjcontainer; and thirdly.
the extension F, to .the'pendant, to form an- Other braceand forward support within the .body. I
- In folding the the aboveenumerfated parts and "adjuncts. thereof are bent upon their'several dividing lines and turned aroundone another in such, a ,way as to ,con
stitute the container ill-ustrat'ed in; Fig. 2. Theparallelograms 1, 2', 3and 4: form the outer. walls ofthis container. The paralleloone as the bottom of thecontainer, and the other alsostands as aninner wall. The lat grams 5 and 6 respectively, constitute inner .wallsq The parallelograms: 12-and 13 serve,
slidefbetween the .walls 2 and 6, and thewalls 4 and 13, one on-each side of the con and also sides to'the same. which adapt it for use as 'a' scoop, trough or spout, as here- '2- f ar e g the upper ends of the parallelograms 1, and 6 are cut down to a slight extent, as at 21, 22 and 2-3, and the lower ends of the para 'allelogram 13 and of the adjoi uingpart F aresimilarly cut ofi at 24 and 25 for a short distance upward. This is done with the .view of providing a ledge for the lip of the lid to rest in, and causing it to lie flush with the upper ends ofthe walls of the container, save ,which the lip of the lid is made to overhang,
surrounding outer the front wall and whichthere'fore is relatively lowered.
. The-cuts, 26 and 27,.at the'bottom edges of their respectivestaples or other. asteii ngs, and therefore the united with one another.
the lids side wings, are for the purpose of affording freedom of action -to the art forming the lid, when folding it away rom 'the central portion .of the. blankand inserting its triangles into the guidesabove described; It is understood that all said parts V that is, joined or If stiff material be employed to make the container, the foldingor doubling lines between the parts are are flexibly interconnected,
produced by scoring or creaslng, in any suitable manner. I
To hold the sides of the carton together, it-is merely necessary to glue the inner face of the wall 1 and press it firmly against the outer surface ofthe wall 5, which will cause the carton 'to hold itsshape as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3] Other means however may be resorted to to secure the several parts in laces, such for example as invention is not limited'in thisor any other e p ta 3- Having thus described my 1nvention,w hat I claim, and desire to' se'cure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
2. A container made from a single blank,
. :1. A container-formed from asingle blankcomprising a bodyof suitable shape, a scooplike cover therefor, said cover having a for.
ward reinforcing-flap on its front edge'andthe body having a cut away portion in which said front edge and reinforcing strip lie when the cover is closed.
foldable into gularbody and a lid for'the same oscillating-as upon a hinge, said blank including' ettensions designed to 50. act as'braces across-the: body and'under the lid, one forward and the other at the-hinge."
3. A container made from'a single blank foldable into .a suitably-shaped body with double front and side walls, .fore'andaft braces therefor, and a lid integral withthe body, said body having cut-away portions "on its inner walls which form w1th the braces a support for the lid. y 4 A container of the kind described, comprising a'body with double front and side walls, and an integral lid thereon,'the inner v walls being partly cut down to receive and I support the edges of the lid within the outer 1 walls, and the outer front wall similarly cut v. and loweredto formfa ledge for the. fore 1; part of the lid to rest in. '5. -A container made froma single b1ank,f: comprising a body with double walls, reinforcing strips formed from said blank for internally bracing said wallsto holdthem' rigid at a suitable distance from, one to the-other, and an oscillatory lid thereover, the inner walls and their braces also serving as supports forthe lid. 6; Acontainer made from a single blank, comprising a.central portion foldable so as to form the. four walls of the body and two i-nnerwallsthereof, a pendant formin the a bottom and a thirdinner wall'of the hody, a :h'eadpiece constituting a lid adapted' to .swing up and down over the body, and ex-1 tensions to said central;- -=p"ortion, pendant;
and headpiece, acting as internal supports and reinforcements 'to the-said body. and its sa-idlid. i Q, In testimony whereof I have signed my-' f name to thisspecification in the presence of i I two subscribingwitnesses. v
