GARMENT-PROTECTOR.
Speciication of Letters Patent. Pagnted Aug, 31, 1909,
Application led February 19, 1909.
Serial N0. 478,809. l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT B. MADILL and ROBERT E. MixEsELL, citizens of the United States, residing. at Coral, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and-useful Improvements in Garment-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates ,to garment protectors, the object in view being to provide means for protecting several portions of a pair of trousers or overalls Where the latter are exposed to the greatest wear,- the invention as a whole being designed for the convenlience of laborers and workmen in gencra One of the main objects of thc invention is to provide in connection with a pair of trousers a number/ of attachable and detachable protectors or patches, and means whereby said protectors o r patches may be conveniently and quickly applied and removed either with or without interposed cushions.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of trousers showing the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are respectively, plan views of a hip protector, thugh protector and knee protector. Fig. 6 is a detail section showing a pad held in placeby one .of-the protectors.
In the drawings, in order to illustrate the present invention, I have shown an ordinary pair of trousers or. overalls indicated at 1, the saine being' provided for convenience Iwith two hfront pockets '2 and rear or hip pockets 3. The trousers are also shown as provided with suspender buttons 4 although it may be understood that the trousers may be made for use in connection with a supporting belt.
In carrying out the present invention, I provide a pair of hip protectors 5', one of which is shown in planin Fig. 3 where it is seen to comprise a marginal hem 6 and eyelet holes 7 arranged around the entire margin thereof to receive a suitable lace 8 by means of which the protector may be secured to the trousers over thel hips as show n in Figsfl and 2. 'In like manner the thigh portions of the trousers are adapted to be covered by protectors or patches 9 one of which is illustrated in detail plan view in Fig. 4, wherein it is seen to comprise a hem l() and marginal eyelets 11, these protectors are secured in place in a similar manner by laces 12. In like maner the kneei portions of the trousers are adapted to be covered by protectors 13 one of which is illustrated in detail in Fig. 5. These protectors or patches are likewise held as shown at 14 and provided around the margin lWith eyelet holes 15. They are likewise secured vin place by laces 16.
In order to provide for securing various -protectors or patches expeditiously in place,
a binding or attaching strip 17 is applied to and around the portion of the trousers to be protected as illustrated in Fig. 6. This stripv is preferably .stitched to the trousers on the outer exposed surface thereof and constitutes practically an endless fla-nge which is provided with eyelet holes corresponding in number and location with the eyelet holes of the appropriate patch or 'protector to be secured thereto, the laces above referred to being reeved through the eyelets of said binding or attaching strip and theadjacent patch or protector, as indicated in Fig. 6.
patch-to the trousers, a-pad 18 of any suit- Before applying a protector or able material or thickness maybe interposed A between the trousers and the patcl1 or protector, lthe latter serving as a retainer for said pad when in its final attached position.
It will `be seenl that the protectors or` patches may be placed in position or removed as may be found necessary and that when worn out, any or all of the patches or protectors may be renewed. This adds materially to the life and durability of the trousers and will be found particularly economical to the laboring classes.
We claim :7 A pair of trousersprovided with a continuous flap or attaching strip bounding a provided with eyelet holes, in combination certain space or section ofthe trousers and the aforesaid eyelet holes, a 4lace passing through the eyelet holes of both of said parts and connecting the parts together, and zrpad interposed between the body portion of the garment und said protector and held in place by the' lutter, substantially :ts cles'eribed.
In testimony'whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
ROBERT B. MADILL. ROBERT IC. M I I( ES ELL. l/Vitnessos S. M. J AoK, l). Ii. Lmwls.
