Description
JAMES C. TODDQQF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.;
' clamps.
.ToaZZ- whmai'fit may concern:
13e it known that I, JAMES. C'. Toon, a citizen ol the 'United States, residing at y. Sioux City, in the county of lVoodbury and i State ofIowa, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following' is' a specification.
My invention relates to clamps and lparticularly to the kind knownas gluing The object of the invention is toprovide a clamp which may be extended to embrace large objects and at the same time operated cross-section on .line IMI, Fig. l, the bar 01'" `with suliicient delicacy' to obtain 'the-fbest results withA the least expenditure of power.
' The'ii'iventioii consistsI in the construction shown in the accompanying drawing in which-'e s Figure "1 is a view ot my invention iii side elevation. Fig.' 2 is a. plan view. Fig. 3 is a reach et' the' clamp being shown.` iii full.
Fig. t is a -moss-section partly on line 2`'2,.y
Fig. 3, the lower part being in full. Fig.
is` a plan viewof the guide for theclamp. screw. Fig. (3 is a plan view of tlicdivided bushing for -tlie 'clamp screw, `Fig. 7 is a plan view of the dust plate to protect the bearing of the screw. Fig. S is aplan view of the adjustable teeth ot' one of the jaws. Fig. 9 is a side elevation-ot the same.
' Referring -to the illustration, A is the head or support ot the clamp `and isnliollow and made preferably of inetal,"iiie losing a bar o r reach l5 of hard wood.I The head is screwedto. the bar by screw bolts a and '2).' Above the head and made integral with it isa threaded. bearing C, in which the screw D operates. The screw is threaded in the -`ual 4manner and isturned by'a .crank arm FJ,
operating against a movable jaw F, the lower` part of which iiicloses the wooden bar, the Vjaw moving freely thereon. Opposed to this jaw is another jaw G, mounted on the movable head (lr and integral withV it, thev head inclosing the bar and adapted to slide :freely thereon. The movable head is large enough totpermit the insertion ofa .toothed gib H underneathtlie wooden bar, the teeth being adapted to grip the wood andliold the head and .jaw in place. A screw I Vturned by a wheel J' operatesiiia threaded bearing K in theflower part of -the'jaw and projects upward against the gib, `pressing it into the wooden bar. lvh'eu the Jaw is placed iii the y specification of Letters Paie-ni'. Application filed December 26, 1908. Seria1No.469,330.
` Patented Aug.l 31,
proper position 'the screwv I is turned and the jaw made tast. The teeth of the'gib project'in the opposite direction from the bearing surface o f the jaw to give the 'gib a firmer grip. The gib is heldin'its position in'thehe'ad bylugs hat eachendresting against the ends "of" the head. l
The screw D which'operatesthe F is cone-.shaped aththe 0perating'-end which presses against a disk or guide plateM in the hollow ofthe jaw. The disk is counter'- sunk in the centerto tit the endofthe screw, thepoint ot vthe latter being relieved from pressure bya small centralliolein the disk. The. upperedge of the disk is flattened to ref tid" ceive a set screw c which holds it in aiixed position in the jaw; Between the enlarged` end of the screw and the tlireadsis a bearing surface which is'inclos'ed by a divided bush# ing N, the'upper edge of which is flattened also to receive a similar set screw d adapted tween the set screw in the jawfis an oil aperture e.
The guide and the bushing give the screw aeent'ral. bearing and not impeded'as 'where the setl screw passes directly upon the operating screw. The bushing also takes up` the -wear of the screw.` A dust plate O pivot-4 ally secured to the jaw by the screw f is adapted to slip around the screw and keeps the dust from the bearing andaids to secure to prevent thebushing from turning. Ben
the bushing in place. The slide is held in,l positionby a small hook o on one side enga ging a. screw q which enters the jaw.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* 1. In a clamp, the combination of a fixed head, a screw operated therein, a movable 'jawoperated by the screw, a disk or guide Vplate in the )aw against the center ot which the screw operates, the point ot the screw Abeing` relieved from pressure by a. central hole in the disk, -a setseiew to hold the disk in place, a movable head and jaw opposed to the -iixed head and movable jaw, a baron which the movable head is adjustable con- .necting 'the heads, and means for securing the movable head to the bar in any desired position, substantially as described.
.2. In a clamp, the combination ot a fixed head, a screw operated therein, a movable jaw operated by the screw, a disk or guide plate in thejjaw against the center of which llt) the'screW operates,- the screw having a bea-rclosing thebearing surface, av set screw to` .hold the'bushingin place, a movable head and jaw `a bar conneetingthe' lheads and means for securing'the movable head to the jaw, substantially as described. d
3. In a clamp, the combination of a' head, a bar to which the-head is secured, a screw operating'in the head, a movable jaw opterated by the s c1eW,'a disk or'guide plate in the jaw counter-sunk lto receive the end of the screwand flattened on one sideto receive' the end of a'set screw,' a set screw to hold the disk -in place, a divided bushing in closing,
the screwv and Vadapted lto 'give the screw a eentralibearing, means for holding the bushing in place, anda movable head and jaw adapted te be secured to the'bar in any de'- sired position, substantially as described.
4. In a clamp, the combination of a fixed head, a screw operated therein, a movable the diskin position, a divided bushing invclosing the screw,4 a -set screw to hold the bushing in place, and a movable head and jaw adapted'to be secured to a bar, and a .bar connecting the heads,"substantial1y as described. A
In testimony whereof I hereunto subseribe my name -in the presence of two Witnesses.
