SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER..

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,,CARL W. STORANDT, of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Door Fastellers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-characters marked thereon.

The present invention relates to fastening sliding doors, such, for instance, as in show cases, and it has for an object to construct and arrange the fastening device, so that the latter when unfastened will not project so as to interfere with the sliding movement, and cause damage to parts of the show case or other object in which the invention may be embodied.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features be ing pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a rear view of a show case embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a section on line d e, Fig. 3 Fig. 3 is a section on line bl), Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the invention applied to a vertically movable door.

The fastening device locks two relatively sliding members together and in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3 both of these members are in the form of sliding doors A and B. The doorA is provided on one of its side faces with a keeper or socket piece, preferably flush with said face and embodying a disk 1 countersunk in the door face and having a central inwardly extending socket 2.

Cooperating with the keeper is the retaining member preferably removably secured to the member B and having a beveled proj ection 3 to enter the keeper. In order that it may be removably secured it has its body portion 4 provided with a slot 5 the inner longitudinal side wall 5 of which is beveled and this slot receives an eye 6 which projects from an attaching plate 7, preferably at an angle other than at a right angle thereto, and in an outward direction, as shown, in order to permit the retaining member to swing on its beveled projection 3 when fitting or removing said retaining member, the wall 5 sliding on the inclined rear face of Specification of Letters Patent.

the eye to force the projection 3 into the socket piece. Attaching plate 7 is fastened to an end face of the member A at rightangles to the keeper or socket piece.

Vlhen the members A and B are in the position shown in Figs. 1 to 3 the retaining member may be inserted in the socket piece, and then fitted over the eye 6. A padlock 8 or other locking device is then employed for holding the retaining member inposition. The eye member and the locking device form a means for holding the retaining member in looking position independently of the member carrying the socket piece.

In Fig. 4 the invention is shown as sinbodied in a show case in which the door slides vertically. Here the socket piece 1 is car ried by the member 0 while the retaining member 4 is carried by the sliding door D.

l Vith this invention all danger of breaking the panes or other parts of sliding doors of show cases is obviated, because it is necessary to entirely remove the retaining device before the door or doors may be opened, and in this way the retaining device cannot project into the path of the door or doors.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a pair of rela tively slidable members, one of which is provided with a socket, of an attaching plate having an eye thereon, secured to the other member, a detachable retaining device abutting the attaching plate and having an opening through which the eye is passed and also having a locking portion projecting into the socket, and a locking device for holding the retaining device on the eye.

2. The combination with a pair of relatively sliding members, of an eye mounted on one member, a detachable retaining member detachably engaging the other member and provided with an opening receiving the eye and a locking device for holding the retaining member on the eye.

3. The combination with a socket piece, of a retaining member having an opening and a portion fitting in said socket piece, an eye member fitting in the opening of the retaining member and having an attaching plate, and a locking device for securing the retaining member to the eye member.

4. The combination with a pair of relatively slidable members, one of which is pro vided with a socket in one face thereof, of an eye member secured to the other member at a slight angle to the socketed face, and a retaining member having a portion to enter the socket, and also having a slotwith an inclined wall receiving the eye.

5. The combination with a pair of sliding doors 0 erating in proximity to each other, of a soc et piece secured to one face of one of the doors and lying flush with the said face, an eye member secured to the edge face of the other door, and a retaining member formed with a slot to receive the eye member, and a projection to fit in the socket piece.
