SEPARABLE STUD.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, HENRY C. VVARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in separable Studs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a stud and is designed to provide one made up of two members, separable from each other and adapted to be secured together with the end of one member fastened intermediate of the ends of the other member, whereby the members are substantially at right angles to form a T-shaped device.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side View of the stud, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same. Fig. 3 is a back view of Fig. 1.
I form one member in the shape of a round stem 10 being split and widened intermediate of its ends to form an eye 11. One end 12 of the stem 10 is hollow and has a latch 13 sliding therein, the latch having a reduced portion surrounded by the spring 14; to force the latch so that it is normally bridging the eye 11 and closing it. when the stem is used as an opener, and it also acts to limit the slide of the latch 13 by engaging the end of the stem 10. The second member of the stud consists of any usual form of head or ornament 16 having a post 17, which post has an eye 18 on its end.
When the stud is to be applied, the post 17 is placed in the hole in the garment to which it is to be applied. The head 15 of the first member, which head provides the means for the manual manipulation of the latch, is drawn back and the eye 11 placed around the eye 18 of the post 17. The latch 13 is then released and passes through the eye 18, thus locking the members to form a T-shaped structure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A stud consisting of two members, one member comprising a stem, the stem being split and widened to form an eye, a latch sliding in the stem and adapted to close the eye in the stem, a spring to force the latch shut, a head on the projecting end of the latch for operating it, the second member comprising a head, and a post on the back of the head, the post having an eye on its end for entering the eye of the stem and receiving the latch to lock the parts together.
