RACK FOR HOLDING DISPLAY-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed September 14,1508. Serial No. 452,853.
accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification.
Our invention relates to a 'rack for holding display boxes, such'as those from which crackers and other bakery products are vended and which are provided with lids connectedto the bodies of the boxes by hinges.
boxes being The object of the present invention is to provide means in a rack of the kind named, whereby the lids of merchandise boxes may be autol'natically opened when the boxes are moved in .a forward direction relative to the rack, in order that access maybe gained into the-boxes, the same means being so constructed as to provide for the "lids moving automatically to closed 1 os'itions when the boxes are again returned 0 their normal positions in the rack.
Figurel is a front elevation of our display box rack with some of the .-compartments of the rack shown occupied by boxes and other compartments vacant; one of the illustrated in a forward and open position and the otherboxes being shown in their normal closed condition.- Fig. II is a perspective view of one of the I box receiving frames and the lid lifting members associated therewith. Fig. III is atop or plan view of a portion of our rack. Fig. IV is a vertical section taken on 'h-ne LIV-JV, Fig. I. Fig. V is a horizontal section taken on line V .V IV.
In the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the corner posts or uprights of the.
framework of our rack,'these members being preferably of angle shape in cross sectlon. The front corner uprights .of the rack framework are united by cross bars 2 and a cross bar 3, the latter of which is located .at the topof the framework and has no other office except that oftying the parts of the framework. The rear corner uprights are united by a horizontal cross bar 4 located midway between the top and bottom of the rack framework and by diagonally disposed braces 5. The corner uprights are tied to .side bars.
and which sub-divide the interior of the rack framework in a horizontal direction to separate and furnish various compartments in the framework of the racka 8 are vertical strips located intermediate of the corner uprights at the sides of the rack framework and which are suitably secured to the end bars'fi. Similar vertical strips 8 are secured to the cross bars 7.
9 designates rods suitably mounted in the .Vertical strips 8 of the rack framework, there being one of said rod's at the top of each .tier of compartments in the rack framework. All of the rods 9, with the exception of the topmost rod, serve as pivotal supports for display boxes, such as those illustrated in the drawings and designated by the letter A, and having lids B, and all of the rods with the exception of the lowermost, serve as pivotal supports for lid lifting members,
as will hereinafter appear.
The box supporting frames are preferably constructed in all particulars as illustrated in the drawings but without limiting ourselves to the exact details of construction of these frames, we will describe them in detail. Each "frame comprises a pair of side bars 10 that are connected to the rods 9, beneath said frame, by legs 14 which are attached to said The side bars 10 are connected to each other by front and rear cross bars 15. Each of the side bars 10 is provided at its rear end with an upturned lip 11 and at its forward end with an upturned lip 12 and each cross bar 15,i s provided at its endswith upturned lips 16. The box receiving frames just described are adapted to be tilted in order that the box resting thereon and between the various upturned lips of the box receiving frames may, when closed, occupy horizontal positions, while their receiving and are pivotally at the front end of each frame is providedwith a forwardly extending finger 13 adapted to engage the front bar 2 of the rack fran'iework located beneath the box receiving frame.
' l7 .designates links pivotally attached to the box receiving framework preferably by connection to the upturned lips 16 of the cross bars 15, as seen most clearly in Figs. II and IV. These links extend upwardly connected at their upper ends to lld lifting arms 18. The lid lifting arms are preferably loosely fitted to the rods 9 mounted in the rack framework and are adapted to be raised by the links 17 when the box receiving frames are tilted forwardly. The lid lifting arms are provided at their free ends with laterally projecting fingers 19 which engage the lower edges of the box lids, whereby said lids are elevated when the box receiving frames are tilted forwardly and the lifting arms are elevated.
In the practical use of my rack, the operator preferably places a finger of his hand upon the finger 13 extending from one of the upturned lips of the box receiving frame winch is to be tilted, and by downward pressure upon the finger of said frame causes the frame to be tilted until it assumes the position illustrated in the second compartment of the rack, Fig. IV and the frame finger strikes against the front cross bar 20f the rack framework beneath it, at which time the lid of the box seated in said display box receiving frame has been elevated to afford I access into said box.
To return the box receiving frame and the box resting thereon to normal positions, it is only necessary to exert upward pressure upon the finger 13 of the box receiving frame, with the result of tilting said frame baekwardly, thereby perinitting the lid lifting arm and the lid of the box to resume their normal lowered positions. Ne elaim:-

3. In a device of the character described, the con'ibination of a support, a box receiving frame tiltably fitted to said support and provided with a stop adapted to engage said support when the frame is tilted forwardly, and a lidlifting arm having connection with said box receiving fame, substantially as set forth.
