NECK-YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
' Application filed November 3, 1908. Serial No. 460,864..
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GLENN E. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to neck yokes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a neck yoke which will permit a free limited movement to the breast chains and which will be of simple construction and of few parts not liable to get out of order.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for connecting the neck yoke to the pole tip, whereby the driving reins are kept from entanglement with the front end of the pole and other projected parts.
It is a source of great annoyance to drivers to have the reins catch over the front end of the pole of the vehicle or some other projected part from which the reins cannot be readily detached from the vehicle.
The objects and advantages hereinbefore described may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a neck yoke made in accordance with my invention and detached from the pole tip. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pole tip disconnected from the pole. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the center of the neck yoke and through the pole tip and end of the pole. Fig. L is a sectional view of the neck yoke and breast strap bearing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the neck yoke having secured at its opposite ends a cap or ferrule 2 which is connected to the neck yoke end by means of an eye-bolt 3. Connected to the eye of said bolt is a ring 4: to which the martingale may be attached by a snap hook or otherwise. A metal yoke 5 is connected to the cap 2 by means of an integral keeper 6, and the upper ends of said yoke are connected by a bolt 7 having a roller 8 disposed between the spaced arms of the yoke. These rollers have free limited play upon the curved bearing plates 9, said bearing plates being curved, as shown, and at their ends secured to an oppositely curved member 10 by means of rings 11 forming the lower links of the breast chains 12. The bearing plates 9 and the members 10 may be slightly resilient to permit a slight yielding action to the pole and to take off some of the strain from the hame connections. At the upper ends of the breast chains 12 double snap hooks 13 are connected, said snap hooks being independently swiveled in the centrally disposed collar 14 to thus prevent the twisting of the chain.
Secured centrally to the neck yoke is a metal collar 15 provided with downwardly projecting lugs 16 to which rings 17 are connected, said rings supporting a metal loop 18. This metal loop is provided with projecting portions 19 in which the rings 17 are seated, and between the rings the cross bar 20 is depressed to hold the rings centrally in the projecting portions 19.
The pole tip consists of the two spaced members 21 provided with bolt holes 22 through which the bolts 23 pass for securing the tip to the pole a. Formed integral with the members 21 is a curved and rounded hook 24, the bill 25 of which is disposed underneath the curved portion. The loop 18 is adapted to be connect-ed to the hook 2 1, as shown in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a neck yoke and pole tip made in accordance with my invention may be produced at comparatively low cost, will give a certain predetermined movement to the pole and animals without undue strains, that the driving lines and other parts of the harness cannot be caught under the pole tip or entangled with projecting parts, and that the breast chains are provided with doubled swiveled snap hooks to prevent twisting of said chains.
I claim 1. A neck yoke provided with end caps, metal yokes connected to said caps and provided with rollers, curved bearing plates for said rollers, and breast chains connected to said bearing plates.
2. A neck yoke provided with end caps, metal yokes connected to said caps, a martin gale ring connected to each cap, rollers connect-ed to said yokes, yielding bearing plates for said rollers, and curved members connected to said bearing plates by means of rings attached to the breast chains.
In testimony whereof I mix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
