Be it known that I, Rosn Hnr'rr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Arthur,in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, administratrix of the estate of J OHN L. HUFFT, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Arthur, in the county of J efierson and State of Texas, as by reference to the duly-certified copy of letters of administration hereto annexed will more fully appear, who did in his lifetime invent certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Chairs and Ironing-Boards, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention.

This invention relates to combination more particularly such as combine the features of a rocking chair and an ironingboard, the former being easily convertible into the latter.

An object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which in its normal form constitutes a chair, and which can easily be changed from the normal form into a stand, such as a table, ironing board, or the like.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combination chair and ironing board, simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and which effects an economy in space.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as a chair; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing in inverted plan view the chair extended to form an ironing board; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device as an ironing board; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, showing the catch used to secure the back to the cross member when the device is a chair.

Before proceeding to a more detailed description of the invention, it should be understood that there is provided a combination :chair and ironing board, the former being .combined a rocking easily convertible into the latter owing to the hinged construction of the device. In the preferred form shown in the drawings, there is chair and an ironing board, although the form of the chair or stand is immaterial, and the constructive details can be Varied to suit individual preference or special conditions. This invention is particularly adapted for homes where furniture space is at a premium and where combination furniture of this kind is of special advantage.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is provided a combination chair and ironing board having rockers 1, seat rails 2 having their ends extended to form supports 3 terminating at the rockers, a cross bar 4 between the rockers, uprights 5 secured to the rockers and the seat rails, arms 7 carried by the seat rails and the uprights, and a cross member 8 between the up er ends of the uprights 5. Secured at the rockers 1 by means of an arched brace 9, to which it is secured by means of screws or the like, is a foot board 11. The latter is further secured to a member 12 which is located between the ends of the seat rails 2. Resting on the seat rails is a seat 13 having its forward edge 14 suitably beveled to coact with the beveled upper edge 15 of the foot board 11 to form a seamless joint. Hinges 16 are employed to secure the seat to the foot board, and are located at the under side so that they are normally invisible. The rear edge of the seat has suitable extensions 17 A back 18 having its upper end 19 resting in a recess 20 in the cross member 8, has extensions 21 which co-act with the extensions 17 of the seat to form a dove-tailed hinge. A hinge pin 22 located in registering openings in the extensions 17 and 21, serves to hold the seat and back pivotally together. A catch 23 of common or preferred form, is located at the rear of the back and serves to secure the latter to the cross member 8. The back 18 is preferably oftapered form to constitute the end of the ironing board.

Arranged on the rear of the back 18 and on the under side of the seat 13, is a guide way 24 having undercut sides. A portion of the guideway is at an angle with that of theback when the device is used as a chair, but when the device is converted into a stand and the back and seat lie in one plane, these portions join and are in alinement to form the guide way. A member 10 located between the seat rails 2, serves to further support the seat, as the portion of the guide way on the under side of the seat, rests upon this cross brace. Slidably located within the guide way, and having its edges engaging the undercut portions of the same, is a looking member 25. Mounted near one-end of this member is a bracket 26 in which a brace 27 has one end pivotally arranged, the other end of which being suitably recessed to engage the cross bar 4 when the device is a chair, or to engage the edge of the recess 20 in the cross member 8 when the device is an ironing board, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby acting as a support for the latter. The locking member is adapted to extend over the joint between the seat and the back to hold these parts extended, as is shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 4. Furthermore, when the device is in the form of a chairthe looking member is inoperative, and is positioned in a portion of the guide way carried by the back so that the back and the seat can assume a position of angularity with respect to one another. When the locking member is in this position, the upper edge thereof rests firmly against the upper side of the guide way so that the brace 27 which engages the cross bar 4 acts as a support for the back.

In converting the device from a chair to an ironing board, the catch 23 is released and the seat and back are swung outwardly until they present an unbroken surface together with the foot board, then the locking member 25 is guided into an upright position across the dove tailed hinge, where it serves to lock the back and seat in position. The brace 27 is then allowed to engage the edge of the recess 20 in the cross member 8, where it serves to hold the back and seat in a raised position; the whole device is then overturned so that itrests on the ends of the rockers 1- 'and the ends of the uprights 5, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 3. It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the form shown, as other forms may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention; for instance, the stand may be either a table or ironing board, or the like, and the chair may be provided with rockers or other suitable supports, or further artistic details of ornamentation not shown, may be employed.

What is claimed as new is: I

1. In a combination chair and stand, chair supports, uprights rigidly secured to the supports, a foot board fixedly secured to the front of the supports, a seat, a back extending from the seat between said uprights, said seat, back and foot board being adapted to cooperate to form a stand, and means for locking the seat and back in position when the device is used as a stand.

2. In a combination chair and ironing board,

plane, and a brace pivotally mounted on said member for supporting said back in position.

6. In a combination chair and stand, chair supports, uprights rigidly secured to the supports, a seat, a back, means for arranging said seat and back in positionto form a' stand top, and a brace adapted to engage a cross bar of the supports, to support the back when the device is a chair and adapted to engage a cross bar of the uprights to support the seat andback when the device is a stand.

7. In a chair of the character described, a. frame, a seathinged at its front edge to the frame and loosely supported at its rear edge on said frame, and a back formed of connected side members extending above the frame and a board hinged to the rear edge of the seat, said board beingdisconnected from the side members and removably held therebetween, whereby when the chair is tilted backward the said board and seat can be extended in alinement above the said side members to form a stand.

8. In a chair of the character described, a frame, a seat hinged at its front edge to the frame and loosely supported at its rear edge upon the frame, a back formed of connected side members extending above the frame and a board hinged to the rear edge of the seat and removably held between the said side members, whereby the seat and board can be brought into alinement to form a stand, means for locking said seat and board in alinement, and means for supporting the board and seat in a horizontal positi'on above the side members of the back when the chair has been tilted backward.

9. In a chair of the character described, a frame having a foot-board secured to the front thereof, a seat hinged to the foot boardand loosely supported at its rear edge on the frame, a back formed of side members extending above the frame and connected at their upper ends by a cross bar, and a board hinged to the rear edge of the seat and extending between the side members with its upper end in detachable engagement with the upper cross bar of the said side members,

whereby the foot board, seat and back board can be brought into alinement to form a stand. a

10. In a combination chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a seat hinged at the front of the frame and loosely supported at its rear edge, a board hinged to the rear edge of the seat and extending between the side members of the back with its upper end in detachable engagement with a cross member of the back, means for locking the said board and seat in alinement to form an ironing board, and a pivoted brace adapted to engage a cross bar of the back to support the said parts when serving as ironing board.

11. In a combination chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a seat hinged to the front of the frame and loosely supported at its rear edge, a board hinged to the rear edge of the seat and extending between the side members of the back with its upper end in detachable engagement with a cross member of the back, a slidable member for locking said board and seat in alinement to form an ironing board, and a brace hinged to the slidable locking member for supporting the parts when used as an ironing board.

12. In a combination chair and ironing board, a chair frame, a foot board secured to the front of the frame, a seat hinged to the foot board and having its rear edge loosely supported, a board hinged to the rear edge of the seat and extending between the side members of the back and in engagement with a cross member of the same, a slidable member for locking the said board and seat in alinement with each other and with the foot-board to form an ironing board, and a brace hinged to the slidable member and adapted to engage the cross member of the back for supporting the parts when adjusted as an ironing board.

13. In a combination chair and ironing board, a frame comprising rockers connected together by cross bars, seat rails connected together by cross bars, uprights secured to the rockers and seat rails and connected together at their upper ends by a cross bar, arms secured to the uprights and to the seat rails, a foot board secured to the front cross bars of the rockers and seat rails, a seat hinged to the foot board, a back hinged to the seat, the seat and back being provided with a guideway, a member slidable in the guideway for locking the back and seat in alinement with each other with the foot board to form an ironing board, and a brace hinged to the slidable member, and adapted to engage either a cross bar of the rockers or the cross bar of the uprights.
