same, and the object of my invention is to produce a Wrapping paper bearing a mark somewhat resembling a' Water 'mark, but which can be easilyseen under all conditions of transmitted and reflected light.
Water marks are putupon ordinary paper during the processof manufacture and before the paper is finished. In many cases these water marks are so faint that they can scarcely be seen except by transmitted light, as, for example, when the paper is held up in front of'a window. By my invention,
however, a paper is produced ,kwhich is clearly marked and which ma can be reflected light as well as readily seen by transmitted light.
My invention is especially applicable to high grades of wrapping paper. Many first class concerns will not use a printed or stamped paper at all, because the printed inscription or stamp causes the paper to seem commonplace and objectionable. Such concerns, therefore, use nothing but plain paper. The marked paper produced by my process however, is entirely free from this objection In carrying out my process, I take high grade wrap-ping paper as it is delivered to purchasers and run it through a printing press of any desired type. The marking material used is of a somewhat greasy nature, and as the paper is run through the press there is produced a distinct mark, which when viewed by transmitted light closely resembles a water mark, but which is even more clearly visible by reflected light.
The marking fluid which I use has the following composition:
. 29 lbs. hydrate alumina 27 #0 linseed oil varnish 30 new base (white) petrolatum painters boiled oil apan drier oz. dense litho job black ink 2 Valvet green ink 1 lb. paraifin.
From this it will be seen that the small quantity'of paraffin, petrolatum, and boiled oil, has a tendency to make the portion of the paper that is struck by the type trans, parent, while the very small quantities of coloring matter in combination therewith produce a clearly visible mark.
I claim: f
The pa'ocess of making marked paper,
' which consists in passing manufactured paper througha press and impressing thereon a mark clearly visible, both by transmitted and reflected light, by means of a marking fluid of a greasy nature, containing a very small proportion of coloring matter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa-,
