of which the following is a specification, refhaving one form of my invention appliedi Fig. 4 is a plan view of the handle attachanother form of my invention. Fig. 6 18 a bottom plan view of the parts shown inrange of movement than has heretofore been Application filed July 6, 1905. ser al No. 442,048.
To all whom it may concern: 2 with each pair clamped to the barrel 1 by Be it known that I, FRANK A. FREEMAN, means of a screw 9. In order to prevent of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and marring of the barrel 1 and also to prevent Commonwealth of- Massachusetts, have inthe shock of the discharge of the piece from vented an'Improved Hand-Grip for Guns, displacing or loosening the grip of the arms 8, each of the latter is provided at its free end with a tip 10 of rubber, or like cushioning material, in the form of a cap slipped on to the end of the arm '8. In order to have the handle 2 close to the barrel 1 so as to form in effect'an extension of the stock said handle may be recessed as at 11 to receive the bar 6. f
In using the gun described above the left hand of the operator grasps the handle 2 while the stock is placed against the shoulder and grasped by the right hand as usual. As will. be clear the gun may be swung about with entire freedom of movement owing to the capacity of the handle 2 to rock on the stud 5.. Also in aiming the gun the handle 2 is free to adjust itself to the position. of the hand of the operator, instead of requiring as heretofore that the operator adjust his '80 hand to the position of the barrel. Another advantage is that the handle 2 is practically insulated from the barrel which becomes heated through repeated firing'and therefore erence being had to the annexed drawings, 1n which i V Figure 1 is aside elevation of a shotgun thereto. Fig. 2 shows on an enlarged scale and partly in section a portion of the gun shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the handle attachment hereinafter described.
ment shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of "a shot gun showing Fig. 5. I 1
lhe objectof my invention is to'provide a suitable handgrip for firearms, such as shotguns, rifles and the like, to the end that they may be used with more freedom and possible. i To this end my improved handgrip for guns is made with a movable handle located beneath the barrel of the gun which maybe grasped by that hand of the person using the gun which is stretched foring away with the necessity of wearing a Ward under the barrel of the gun. In the glove upon the left hand to shield it from the best form ofmy invention this handle ispiv-f heat of the barrel as has heretofore been the oted on an axis perpendicular to the axis of custom.
the barrel, or substantially so, so that in In one type of shot gun in common use swinging the muzzle of the gun about as in today that portion of the stock which exfollowing the flight of the target, the handle tendsforward under the barrel is made with is free to move on its pivot and accommoa separately removable fore-piece which has date itself to the movements of the hand of a metal tongue extending lengthwise of it the operator. Also the handle serves to prowhich carries the latch by which the fore tect the hand of the gunner from the heat of piece is secured in position. In Figs. 5 and the barrel; 6 I have shown a gun of this type embody- Having reference to the drawings, 1 reping my invention and in said figures 20 is V resents the barrel of a double barreled' shot the removable fore-piece and 21 the tongue.
gun, and 2 the pivoted handle. The handle As herein shown the tongue 21 is extended 2 is bored transversely to receive a bushing beyond the fore-piece and tapped to receive 3 that is fastened within the handle by a stud 5 on which the handle 2] swings screws 4. Pivotally mounted within the laterally, the transverse bore of sa1d handle bushing 3 is a stud 5 to the upper end of being provided with a bushing 13*. In this form of my invention while it is possible to which is fastened a bar6, sa1d bar being mounted upon the upper threaded end of remove the handle 2? yet said handle is intended to be a permanent part of the gun the stud 5 .and clamped in place against a shoulder on the stud at the base of the l structure and if desired the stud 5' may be threads by a nut 7 To the sides of the bar permanently secured to the tongue.
6 are pivoted at 12 four upwardly curved What I claim is:
2. In a firearm the combination with the barrel thereof of a handle arranged beneath said barrel and means connecting the handle to the forepart of the gun with provision for normally free sidewiee oscillating movement only of the handle relatively to the barrel said movement being in an axis perpendicular to the barrel.
